Usually the "default" option is the best solution.

However, the other options exist for dealing with very specific configuration issues ... effecting either performance or compatibility.

When a modem receives an SMS message, there may be several different ways that the modem can process the message.

The modem might store the message to device memory, or it might store the message to the SIM card, or it might route the message directly to NowSMS over the modem interface.

The "default" profile uses the modem in its default state. So it is up to the modem to decide how it wants to handle received messages, and NowSMS will process them appropriately.

The "SIM" option has NowSMS send commands to the modem to tell the modem that it should store received messages on the SIM card, and NowSMS polls the SIM card for received messages.

The "device memory" option has NowSMS send commands to the modem to tell the modem that it should store received messages in device memory, and NowSMS polls device memory for received messages. (Note: If there is no device memory available for this purpose, NowSMS will detect this and poll the SIM instead.)

In more recent versions, there is also a "Direct to Modem" option. In this mode, NowSMS sends commands to tell the modem to route received messages to NowSMS directly without storing them ... if the modem supports this capability.

With all of the options, you may see slightly different behaviour in the modem based upon the setting. Some settings may work a little better with particular modems.

All of the options will typically work with any modem, because NowSMS detects unsupported capabilities, and adjusts accordingly.
