Hi Bryce
this me again
when we send a message and th emessage exceeded the 160 character
it segements it automatically
but it reach the mobile corrupted with strange characters
the message is in plain english
and we send using SMPP protocol
i know there is an option to let the SMSC segment the message itself
but it is available only in HTTP protocol
plz it is very urgent this time
thanks and sincerely

Hi George,

Under "Advanced Settings" in the setup of the SMPP connection, try changing the setting for "Encode long text messages with 7-bit packed encoding".

I believe that option is checked by default. Try unchecking it.

Basically, there is ambiguity in how long text messages should be handled in SMPP environments, so we have found that different SMSCs handle things differently.

Let me know if this makes a difference.

Thanks Alot Bryce
it realy fixed the encoding and the message (>160) was reached in two messages

one more Q related to this option
can i send the message (>160) to the specified mobile number in one message
i mean NOT to be received in two distinct messages

OR it is not available to append the second message to the first one
thx alot
sincerely

Hi George,

Our SMPP implementation always segments the message when submitting via SMPP. (In our testing, we have not seen many SMSCs that will accept the longer messages if they are not segmented prior to submission.))

A message that is longer than 160 characters is always going to have to be sent out over the air as multiple messages. The only question is whether it is segmented into multiple messages at the SMSC or by the application submitting it to the SMSC.

I do have one question for you.

By this, do you mean that the message is being received on the mobile as two separate text messages?

That is not normal.

When we segment the message, we include headers in the message to tell the receiving client to re-assemble the message so it appears as a single longer message on the receiving phone.
