Hi,
I am experiencing some problems configuring usb modem Falcom Samba 75 on Vista. Modem is installed correctly, diagnostic on modem driver window is correct, but when I try to add this modem to Nowsms gateway I got first message that modem is initialized and after minute or two instead of message that modem test passed ok, I got "Unable to initialize modem: Error 80000048 from lineOpen". I tried to add modem as COM5 port and succeeded. Sms is working, but I need MMS messaging and unfortunately COM5 is not an option. Same modem on Win XP is working perfectly with no problems at all.

There is smsdebug.log listing:
13:53:23:254 [0] main: Now SMS/MMS Gateway v2010.02.09 Web server started on port number 8800

Hi Igor,

I don't have any ideas other than to try the latest drivers for the modem to see if they work better.

Uninstall the current drivers, and then try installing the latest:

Hi Des,
I am using latest driver already. I used serial port monitor and noticed that modem hangs up on at+cfun=1,1. Do you have any ideas why is this happening?
Thanks
Igor

Hi Igor,

When NowSMS is unable to access the modem, is it accessible via the Windows Control Panel, Phone & Modem Options, Modems, Diagnostics?

When the modem is reset, it is possible that the USB driver might assign it a different virtual COM port number. In that case, configuring NowSMS to connect to the named modem driver instead of the COM port number should resolve your problem.

We could add a configuration parameter to disable the use of AT+CFUN=1,1 to reset the modem ... but this command is usually only used as a last resort for a non-responsive modem (or persistent errors sending messages). So I'm not sure this would make a difference.

Hi Des,

Modem is not accessible from nowsms, but it is via the Windows Control Panel, Phone & Modem Options, Modems, Diagnostics.

Modem always after reset assign same port number to modem. My problem is that I can configure modem as COM5 port in nowsms and it is working OK(just sms), but I cann't configure nowsms to connect to the named modem driver.

Can you please tell me this configuration parameter for disabling the use of AT+CFUN=1,1. I would like to try this also.

Thanks
Igor

Is this that I installed first Nowsms Lite important? I had a problem when choosing modem, nowsms lite was pending for a long time, so I killed it, uninstalled it and installed Nowsms full. One more thing, when I installed 60-day trial nowsms showed that day left for trial are only 29 instead 59. I used Lite version just for one hour.

Hi Igor,

It is only possible to disable the AT+CFUN=1,1 that is sent after successive modem errors when trying to send a message.

This is done by adding ModemHardResetAfterError=No under the [SMSGW] header of SMSGW.INI.

This does not disable AT+CFUN=1,1 completely.

If NowSMS is having problems accessing a modem, it will still send this command. So for example, after you see "OpenDevice: Could not negotate modem speed" in the SMSDEBUG.LOG, as part of the attempt to regain access to the modem, NowSMS is going to send AT+CFUN=1,1 ... regardless of this setting. At this point, NowSMS is not successfully communicating with the modem, so it will try to reset it.

Have you tried uninstalling the modem drivers (and any related software) and then re-installing?

It seems like something is fundamentally wrong with the modem driver.

Since accessing COM5 directly sometimes works ... one thing you might want to try is going into Phone & Modem Options in the Windows Control Panel ... removing the current modem definition, and then adding a new one by manually picking the modem driver from the list. There is a driver called Standard 33600bps Modem that is very generic and works with GSM modems (do not try to use a higher speed driver as they add landline specific init commands which can confuse GSM modems). Maybe that will work.

The trial period confusion is unfortunately normal. Both products use the same counter, but Lite initialises it to 30 days instead of 60. If necessary, we can extend it when it gets closer to expiration.

Hi Des,
I have one more case like this, this time on Win XP.
I installed modem for the firs time and pick it from the list. All went good, modem was initialized, tested and added to SMSC connections.
Everything was working fine until I decided to setup MMS settings. After seting up MMS I tried to test connection and got next message:
Now SMS/MMS Gateway v2010.02.09
---------------------------
NowSMS has updated your modem driver settings to enable GPRS connectivity.
Your system must be rebooted to apply these updates.
Do you wish to reboot now?
I pressed Yes and reboot pc.
After reboot connection test didn't work and post message "Unable to initialize modem: Error 80000048 from lineOpen". After analizing driver before and after updating modem driver settings and found that two lines are changed in modem driver file in windows\inf directory.
Before:
[MfgAddReg]
HKR,Init,2,, "AT&FE0Q0V1&C1&D2S0=0<cr>"
HKR,, Reset,, "ATZ<cr>"
After:
[MfgAddReg]
HKR,Init,2,, "AT E0Q0V1&C1&D2S0=0<cr>"
HKR,, Reset,, "AT <cr>"
Registry keys were changed also the same way.
I shall try to fix this problem manualy now and hope for the best. Have you ever meet such problem, what is the cause and most important how to fix it if I don't manage manualy?
Thanks in advance

Hi Igor,

This condition indicates that this particular modem loses its GPRS APN settings when the AT&F and/or ATZ command is sent to the modem.

This is a problem, because NowSMS needs to set the APN before initiating the data connection. However, when Windows initiates the data connection, it sends the "Init" and "Reset" commands.

When NowSMS detects this problem, it specifically tests to see if the AT&F and ATZ commands cause the GPRS APN settings to be lost, and if so, it tries to update the modem driver settings to remove any AT&F and/or ATZ commands from the "Init" and "Retry" strings ... as this will work-around the problem.

There have been scattered reports where this driver update does not work properly. We've never been able to recreate this problem, but if I had to make a guess, maybe some modems don't like an extra space in the AT command.

There is an easy work-around ...

Go into the Phone & Modem Options in the Windows control panel, and for each of your modems, add an "Extra initialisation command" of AT+CGDCONT=1,"mms.apn.name"

Replace mms.apn.name with the APN name that you need to use for MMS with your mobile operator. Keep the "quote" characters around the APN name.
