Hi,

I have a couple of questions really. Being new to this area I am not sure qhat it is I need to ask but here goes.

If I send someone an mms message (video clip) does it appear on their phone as soon as they open the message notification, or does the user have to navigate to a URL?

Could I send a video in windows media format (streaming video?)

Is it possible to send send an encoded video clip from my webcam/desktop (say through a visual basic app) to a mms enabled phone. If so what technologies am I looking at using.

Any info appreciated, Thanks.

Duncan.

Hi Duncan,

By default, most phones automatically download the content of an MMS message, so that when you open the message you don't have to wait for it to download in order to start playing.

(Most phones do have a configuration option to not automatically download MMS, but to prompt before downloading. But it is rare for people to use that setting except when roaming.)

Video needs to be in 3GPP format, or MPEG-4. So you would need to convert it from Windows Media format. I haven't used it myself, but I've heard good things about the following tool for mobile video format conversions:

NowSMS is a good tool for getting MMS content out over the network. See http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm for some background information on how MMS works, and some configuration options for connecting to NowSMS.

Submitting MMS messages into NowSMS is usually done via HTTP. The formats are described here:
