Hi !
I have a PC Card (3Com 3CXM756 Global GSM Cell Modem PC Card) which I use as a modem. There is no SIM card slot in this modem. Will it be a problem later ? Can it do those functions just like Sierra AirCard does ?
Thank you in advance, have a good day.

Hi Raymond,

There is no SIM card slot in this modem?

How does it connect to the GSM network?

I did some searches on the web for this product, and I found it to be very confusing. The product mentions "GSM", but provides no details on how it makes a GSM connection. In fact, it has an "XJack" for hooking up to a conventional phone line, which doesn't make sense.

It mentions having a cable that is sold separately which connects to different GSM or AMPS phones. As such, I would not expect this modem to support the AT command set for sending/receive SMS messages. It might be able to make a data call for use as a modem with some phones, but I don't think it would support the SMS interface.

Since a cable has to be purchased separately, you'd probably be better off with a serial or USB cable for your mobile phone (assuming that your phone supports modem capabilities directly, and assuming that your phone supports GSM 07.05 / GSM 07.07 for sending/receiving SMS via AT commands).

Any recommendations for modem type for a low to medium traffic server? The customer is asking if Nokia D211 Card Phone may be a good choice.... Will this be better or more stable than an ordinary phone ?

Olaf,

Unfortunately, the Nokia D211 is not a good choice. The D211 works fine for sending messages, but its documentation clearly states (and our experience shows) that the modem does not support the AT command set for receiving SMS messages. So it's definitely send-only, which is a shame because I liked the idea of the card supporting both 802.11 and GPRS.

I like the Sierra Wireless Aircard 750. The only problem with the Aircard is that most operators ship it with old firmware, so you need to upgrade to the v3.x firmware after you install the modem. Another issue is that in order to receive messages, you need to disable the "Watcher" application, otherwise "Watcher" can sometimes grab received SMS messages before NowSMS gets them.
