Hi,

There are hundreds of different models of these modems, often with operator specific versions, and different models available in different countries, so it is difficult to make a recommendation.

The current version of NowSMS supports using an Android phone as a modem, and for most modem scenarios, I would prefer an Android phone instead of a USB modem. (Exception is if you have a need to send binary message types.) Moto G is a reasonably priced unlocked Android phone and decent specs, which is a good choice.

Using an Android phone as a modem offers significant advantages if you are sending and/or receiving MMS, and for multiple modem configurations. (Many USB modems were not designed with the consideration that multiple devices might be installed in the same machine and their drivers cannot sometimes handle it.)

For USB modems, older Option ICON modems were quite good (3xx and 2xx series). Generally speaking, Huawei modems are ok, but there are probably 100 different models just from Huawei. The E160 and E173 are budget models we have had good experience with. AVOID any models with "router" or WiFi support as they tend to not work well for SMS or MMS. Novotel, Sierra Wireless and iTegno are other brands that generally work well.

I have a USB modem 3G (huawei) I installed NowSMS on my computer (i'm still under the trial period) I clicked on NowSMS lite and the software doesn't detect any modem. I installed the driver for the modem and restart the computer but NowSMS still doesn't detect the USB modem. Any idea on what I can do ?

Hi ST,

Have you installed the Huawei software? (Often called Mobile Partner, but often rebranded by mobile operators)

If you go into the Windows Control Panel, in the Modems section, you should see the modem. Unlike serial port connected modems, USB modems require manufacturer drivers, so there's no COM port without the modem driver installed.

Huawei modems are generally referred to as "zero install modems", which doesn't quite mean what it says. It means a separate install CD is not required. When you first connect the modem to the computer, it looks like a USB drive, and that is where you find the software drivers. Once the drivers installed, it appears as a modem instead of a drive.
