I haven't tested the K500, but the SonyEricsson K700 works great ... send/receive SMS ... send MMS.

In order to work with NowSMS, a phone needs to support the following:

For sending/receiving SMS:

ETSI GSM 07.05 - This is the GSM modem AT command set. NowSMS requires that the modem support PDU mode AT+CMGF=0 (although with the most recent update, NowSMS can send/receive text messages if the modem only supports text mode).

A problem with receiving SMS can occur if the phone does not expose received SMS to the GSM modem interface. (This is what happens with Nokia Series 60 devices ... the GSM modem interface supports all of the relevant commands, but the phone software intercepts all received SMS messages and does not present them over the GSM modem interface.)

For sending MMS via an operator MMSC:

ETSI GSM 07.07 - This extends the GSM modem command set for GPRS. Basically, we just need AT+CGDCONT support, and support for dialing a GPRS connection via ATD*99#.

Receiving MMS uses the same standards as listed above. However, on every MMS compatible phone that I have tried, the MMS client on the mobile phone always intercepts the received MMS notification such that it never gets presented over the GSM modem interface. (Sometimes you can get the MMS notification over the GSM modem interface on the K700i, but not consistently.) So to receive MMS messages with a modem, you need a dedicated GSM modem device so that you don't have any client software running on the device that gets in the way.
