Is there a way to prove a text is SMS generated as opposed to authentic? I ask because a friend is in trouble resulting from derogatory texts sent to important people supposedly from him. I know that he didn't send them from his phone account because I have checked those records. We suspect a malicious co-worker is doing this. There must be a way to detect these, are people would be doing this a lot. Any feedback is appreciated.

By SMS generated, I meant sent from a computer and disguised to look like it was sent by the person.

Hi Daniel,

Without getting the mobile operator involved to check their logs, I'd say it would be pretty tough to prove it.

There are definitely ways to forge SMS sender addresses, just as there is caller ID. The degree of difficulty varies by country, but in some cases it is quite easy.

If your friend needs to show proof to someone, does their mobile operator provide detailed billing records? I know with at least one of my accounts, I can login and while it does not show the content of my texts, it does show a log of date/time and recipient for all messages sent from my phone.

Good luck.

We have subpoena for both mobiles. They are surprisingly unhelpful. So we have some evidence that the texts were not authored by the one accused, but what we lack for the 'smoking gun' is a clear connection to the malicious individual.

Given what I know now, I am surprised that this doesn't happen more often. Thanks for your feedback!
