Normally an MMS notification is delivered to the client via an SMS containing an URL to the real MMS.

Is it possible to get this notification (or just the MMS-URLs) to the client in any other way than via SMS? Maybe is it possible to poll the MMSC for messages waiting to be delivered to the client or something like that?

Hi,

It is not supported by many MMSCs (including our own), but later versions of the MMS specification added capabilities for an optional server side MMBOX that it would be possible to poll.

Details can be found in the OMA (Open Mobile Alliance) MMS specifications.

I would be curious to hear your use case. The reason we don't support it is sort of a "catch-22", as we are not aware of any clients that support it.

That said, we are not interested in a full MMBOX implementation, but a scenario that supports polling is of potential interest to us from the server side.

Hi Des

That means the current/native MMS clients lets say on Android wont support polling?

Maybe WAP Push via IP might help in the current MMS clients?

Kindly let me know

Hi Sam,

Maybe there are some hidden settings in the Android MMS client (perhaps for MMBox support), but there's nothing that I am aware of.

Polling in general is not a good idea ... push is preferable.

If you can allocate a static IP address to a terminal device, NowSMS MMSC can be configured to send the WAP Push messages over UDP.

We have primarily suggested that implementation for controlled test environments. If it proved to be a more practical solution for a particular production environment we have had plans to integrate with RADIUS accounting to track dynamic device IP address assignments.

Thanks Des

Is it possible NowWap Gateway allocates some kind of IP address/identifier to a connecting device if used as a wap gateway/proxy? I meant dynamic device IP address assignments by NowWap.

Once NowWap can do that wap push over IP might work out.

Kindly let me know
Thanks
Sam

Hi Sam,

Yes.

As a practical proof of concept ... we had some experience with a similar setup.

Several years ago, there was an attempt at a standard instant messaging protocol for mobile phones called Wireless Village. (Wireless Village merged with the Open Mobile Alliance and the specification received a few more enhancements and revisions. Of course, it failed to gain any market traction and is basically obsolete.)

At the time, we had a Wireless Village server, and we implemented hooks between this server and NowWAP to be allow IM push notifications to be sent over IP instead of SMS.

Based upon lessons learned from that product, we have a design document covering several alternative scenarios to deploy similar hooks from our MMSC.

There just hasn't been a pressing commercial reason to implement...yet.

Most of the inquiries we receive asking for this functionality are from parties that are not mobile operators and do not have the overall network control required.

In order to be technically feasible, this type of IP based push for MMS notification requires that the MMSC (or cooperating component, such as NowWAP) be able to receive a RADIUS Accounting or Diameter AAA feed that reports all APN connect and disconnect activity.
