Hello,

We are using Now.Wap Proxy v2008.06.03 with (3k license). Once per week we have message in error log - "ERROR GWmalloc" "Memory Exception Error during malloc - insufficient memory" and after service is restarting. Now we have Windows 2003, but same problem was on XP and Windows 2000. Same problem was also on previous versions of NowWap. Upgrading memory also didn't help (now we have 3GB). Looks like there is a problem with cleaning memory. We can't enable debug because of high traffic.

Now we expect a big problem because of restarting: we are losing radius information which is very important.

Hope you can help us.

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Are you using WTLS? Or is this non-WTLS (only SSL/TLS over HTTP)?

If you periodically monitor the stats in "Task Manager", do you notice a gradual creep in the "Virtual Memory Size" or "Memory Usage" columns? (Use View/Select Columns in Task Manager to enable these columns.)

Hi Des,

We have non-WTLS version.

In "Task Manager" we see, that memory usage an VM size of wap3gxs.exe is always increasing.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael ...

Hmm ... can you give me some examples of these values at different times so I can get an idea of the pattern.

Some increase is normal, but it should eventually level off.

I'm not aware of any memory leaks in the version that you mention. However, it sounds like there is. We've started our own tests to investigate, but I'd also like to get an idea of what the rate of the memory increases is on your system.

Hi Michael,

We're running a variety of tests, and we might be getting close to recreating a problem.

Before the crash, what are typical values that you are seeing for "max active users" and "max active requests"?

Hi Des,

I don't think that we have "typical" values of "max active users" and "max active requests". Usually we have about 500 active users and 2000 max active users. Max active sessions is about 500. In the evening we have highest load, but in most of cases restart doesn't happens this time.

Hi Michael,

I was optimistic that we were close to recreating a problem. However, we are not.

We've searched high and low for memory leaks and have not found any.

There isn't any virus scanning software running on the system, is there? Typical virus scanning software could get easily overwhelmed by the amount of activity, and because of the way that it hooks into the TCP/IP stack, the memory usage will appear to belong to wap3gxs.exe, but the leak is actually belongs to the virus scanner.

Unfortunately, that's the only idea that I have at this point.

If the issue isn't a virus scanner, then I would like to see if it is possible to enable remote access to the system for us to take a closer look. (If this is possible, we can handle the details via e-mail ... just send an e-mail to nowsms@nowsms.com with "Attention: Des" in the subject line, and I'll give you an IP address to temporarily open access for in your firewall.)

If this type of access isn't possible, then can you tell me what the "Handle Count" and "Thread Count" values are in Task Manager. These values will fluctuate a lot during normal operation ... I'm just wondering if they are steadily growing along with memory usage, or if they are fluctuating independently from memory usage.

Hi Des,

We have no anti-virus software on this server and we have no another services on it at all.

I sent mail with our IP/Password and waiting from you your IP to give you remote access.

Michael

Hi Michael,

Sorry, I was travelling last week ... and my VPN was down, so I couldn't connect back to my VPN to allow me to get to your VPN.

I'm back, so I'll be checking in again.

The problem is, I haven't noticed any slow, gradual leaks. Memory usage seems normal for the number of connections. And then at some point it grows very fast. It's not clear what is causing that. But now that I've returned, I can get back to regular monitoring.
