Hi,

It's strange ... but we haven't had any 1067 errors reported until one was reported earlier this month.

I realise that you're using NowSMS Lite, which is a little different from the other scenario. But the exact same service code is used in both regular NowSMS and NowSMS Lite.

Since you mentioned re-installing to c:\nowsms, it looks like you read the other thread:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/41707.html

In that case, re-installing to c:\nowsms seemed to resolve the problem.

That end user also mentioned that they un-installed Sun Java WTK3.0 ... but I don't see how that could be related, as there is no Java code involved in running the NowSMS service.

I discussed this issue with our developers today, and we reviewed potential causes for the error.

We believe that the only situation that can trigger this particular error is when the service process wrapper cannot find SMSGWS.EXE to launch it.

In reviewing this, we noticed that a required flag was not being set when launching SMSGWS.EXE.

What is strange is that this code hasn't changed in 6 years. And it works fine for us on Windows XP3 ... even newer releases such as Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7.

We added this flag, and perhaps it will fix the problem that you are experiencing, even if it is not clear why we are not seeing the problem elsewhere.

I've posted a NowSMS Lite update at http://www.nowsms.com/download/lite20090925.zip.

Des,

Installed the new version, still not working .
The only noticeble deifference is that I'm required to choose the active account when I use the "test connection" under the modem tab/mms configuration. The computer is on a domain but I have never encountered any problem with local services. I have administrative rights under my account. Try to suggest me a test to test your service, can I run it from the command shell? I will try nowsms from a different computer, but I will appreciate the option to run it from my laptop, it will a major factor on ur future decisions.

Thanks,

Zohar

Hi Zohar,

This really has me confused. The only way we have been able to manually recreate a 1067 error is by deleting SMSGWS.EXE. The service terminates abruptly if it cannot launch SMSGWS.EXE.

We'd like to try one more test ... a slight modification to how the service wrapper launches SMSGWS.EXE to see if it makes any difference on your system.

Please download http://www.nowsms.com/download/lite1067test.zip and see if that version can get around this error.

If not, I can only figure there is a virus scanner that is for some reason preventing the launch.

It is possible to manually run SMSGWS.EXE, which is the NowSMS "service". (SMSGWSNT.EXE is a service wrapper that launches it.)

Additionally, you need to run MMSC.EXE for MMS functionality.

Maybe the slight changes in this update will remove this need ... but I'm not real optimistic because the existing logic has worked so well elsewhere.

By "choose the active account", do you mean specifying whether the connection is home, work or public? That does frequently happen the first time you make a data connection. Specifying "public" will work just fine.

Found the problem, discovered MMSC.EXE and SMSGWS.EXE are not in the nowsms folder... antivirus eset (node 32).... as you have guessed.
Thanks for the support.

Follow-up information on this 1067 error ...

This 1067 error appears to be a problem with a virus scanner reporting false positives against the MMSC.EXE file.

A 1067 error will occur if either the SMSGWS.EXE or MMSC.EXE file is missing.

The ESET NOD32 virus scanner is reporting a false positive for infection of the MMSC.EXE file across multiple versions of NowSMS. (The text from the virus scanner says that it is "probably" a virus, but it quarantines or deletes this executable, even though it isn't sure that it is infected.)

We have submitted a report to ESET so that they can fix their virus signature database.

(BTW, one useful tool for analysing files for which a virus scanner is reporting a potential infection is http://www.virustotal.com.)

Thanks Bryce!

I have disabled the scan on nowsms folder for now. Everything works well!
