Hi, I'm trying to set up a system where we use an O2 SIM, NowSMS (v2006.03.09) and a Falcom SAMBA MC 75 USB GRPS/GSM/EDGE modem device to receive MMS messages and access them from NowSMS using the POP3 interface.

The system was working ok last week, but now whenever an MMS is sent to the O2 number, we only get an SMS saying "You've been sent a media message from +447970123456 that your mobile doesn't support. View it at www.o2.co.uk/m ....".

The SIM works perfectly if put in a real phone (nokia 6280/various sony ericsons) but not in the SAMBA 75 device.

Is this anything to do with the NowSMS configuration? Any advice you could give for this?

Thanks
Jack

Hi Jack,

If you put the SIM into a real phone. And then send an MMS message to the SIM phone number ... does the MMS arrive properly?

If you then put the SIM back into the modem ... and then send an MMS message to the SIM phone number ... does the SMS with a notification appear immediately, or is there some delay?

If the SMS notification appears after some delay, then try setting "SMS Message Storage" to be "Direct to Modem" under "Properties" of the modem in the NowSMS "SMSC" list. Does this make a difference? Also try setting "SMS Access" to "GPRS" (this will cause NowSMS to perform a GPRS attach when it starts up, as without this I suppose the operator might have a reason to think that the device is not GPRS capable).

If it doesn't, then put the SIM back into a phone again ... and confirm that sending another MMS message results in it being received properly as an MMS.

If you're still seeing this behaviour, I'm wondering if maybe there has been a configuration change with O2's network ... where somehow they are looking at the device that is registered on the network, and they have a table of which devices they think support MMS, and which do not. And this modem is not in their list.

I'd be very surprised if they had such a system in place. Usually, when this type of thing happens, there is a database at the operator where they have information about the phone number associated with your SIM, and whether or not it support MMS. It is not normal for this type of determination to be made in real time.
