I want to receive MMS-messages with my PC, using a connected mobile phone (Samsung E720). I've tried a lot, but it doesn't seem to work. I connected my phone to the program, the program runs, send a MMS to my phonenumber, but the program doesn't do anything. What do I have to do to let it work? Greetings, Pim, from The Netherlands

Hi Pim, Basically, using a phone as a modem, you can't do this. (Maybe somewhere there is a phone that can be used as a modem that allows this, but I have not seen one that would allow this consistently.) The problem is that the WAP Push/MMS client on the mobile phone intercepts all MMS notification (and WAP Push) messages, and prevents them from being forwarded over the GSM modem interface. You need a dedicated GSM/GPRS modem device (e.g., Wavecom, Multitech, Siemens MC35, etc.), as opposed to a phone being used as a GSM/GPRS modem. -bn

Bryce, Can you clarify what you mean when you say that a "phone being used as a GSM/GPRS modem" will not work? I have a Sony Ericsson T610 on T-Mobile USA. Is there no way to make this phone receive MMS messages to my PC via the gateway? Thanks, Jonathan

Sorry, I missed this message when it was originally posted. But, I'm not sure how to provide any more clarification, other than to say that no, it won't work with your T610. You can send/receive SMS messages using that phone as a GSM modem, and you can send MMS messages using that phone as a GSM/GPRS modem. But you cannot receive MMS messages using that phone as a GSM/GPRS modem. This is not a limitation specific to the T610, but basically this applies to using any phone as a modem (at least all of the phones that I have tried). The problem is that the WAP Push/MMS client on the mobile phone intercepts all MMS notification (and WAP Push) messages, and prevents them from being forwarded over the GSM modem interface. You need a dedicated GSM/GPRS modem device (e.g., Wavecom, Multitech, Siemens MC35, etc.), as opposed to a phone being used as a GSM/GPRS modem. -bn

Assuming the use of a Wavecom or Multitech modem, if a picture is sent to the mobile number on the modem, where does that picture end up on the now server? How can it be accessed for further processing. Thanks

Iam wondering if I use MULTITECH GPRS GSM MOdem with Cingular Network , will I be able to send MMS Messages? I read somewhere that we cannot send mms messages using AT Commands. The reason Iam asking this is because I realized that Multitech modem's Ethernet interface is via AT Commands ... All in all What I want to accomplish is to be able to send MMS . Is this possible wuing Nowsms + Multitech Modem with Cingular or Tmobile Please reply so I can move ahead with my project. Thank you for your reply.

Hi, It is not possible to send MMS messages with only AT commands. (The MMS interface is more complicated than this.) However, that said, NowSMS will work with a Multitech GSM/GPRS modem for sending/receiving both SMS and MMS. -bn

Hi Raj, Yes. I have worked with other customers who are using the Multitech GSM/GPRS modem to send and receive MMS messages using a Cingular SIM (T-Mobile also). -bn

Bryce Thanks for the quick update , I will place an order for the Multitech GSM/GPRS Modem . Do you suggest which one should I go with , they seem to offer different models RS232 Ethernet USB BLUETOOTH. Regards Raj

Hi Raj, I'd suggest either RS232 or USB. Personally, I prefer RS232, because any problems are easier to troubleshoot. -bn

Bryce HOw many modems can nowSMS Handle for maximum throughput and can we direct messages to go over a specific modem. Another thing Iam also interested to know is is there an api available so we can integrae our web application with the nowsms Regards Raj

Hi Raj, There is no maximum defined. Generally speaking, you will run into challenges in Windows getting Windows to separately address many different modems before you encounter a limit in NowSMS. That said, we've only performed testing up to 16. APIs are HTTP based ... some helpful links: http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/sending_messages/sendin g_text_messages.htm http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/sending_messages/url_pa rameters_for_sending_messages.htm http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/mms_notifications_and_c ontent/Submitting_MMS_Messages.htm -bn

Bryce Thanks for your reply ,I would first like to say , your support Rocks , Iam getting all the questions answered which is making it easier for me to make a decision. Another question I have is how many (SMS/MMS)messages per minute I can send. Can you provide me some metrics Regards Raj
Bryce Norwood - NowSMS Support Board Administrator Username: Bryce Post Number: 6481 Registered: 10-2002 |
Hi Raj, We base our license on throughput, so that is one factor. The other factor is operator throughput...and it varies considerably....depending on operator and your signal strength. It can vary from 6 to 12 msgs per min per modem if sms over gprs is not supported to 30 to 60 msgs per min if sms over gprs/edge/3g is supported. Best to test on single modem first to determine limits in your environment. (Forgive me in advance as myself and much of core tech staff will be on a shared holiday over the next week which will delay next response.) -bn

Hi, I'm sorry, this is the support forum for the Now SMS/MMS gateway product. So I can only provide very limited non-product related support. If you want to develop your own software, I can only suggest that you look for the ETSI GSM 07.05 and ETSI GSM 07.07 specifications, which document AT commands for the GSM modem standard. These specifications can be found at http://www.etsi.org. -bn |
