I would like to migrate from a 32-bit Windows Server 2003 to a 64-bit Windows Server 2008.

Would like to know if that is feasible to migrate my current version of NowSMS 2010.11.14 to the latest 2011.07.05 together with my configuration migration?

If the steps below still apply?

Just to confirm, if I will need to get a new activation code after the installation?

Thank you and looking forward to your reply.

Hi Adi,

That information basically applies, except that Windows Server 2008 rules do not allow us to maintain data in the Program Files directory.

Actually, those same rules applied in Windows Server 2003. So I might be over-complicating things.

What you need to do is locate the NowSMS directory structure that contains configuration information such as INI files and other subdirectories (such as MMSCDATA for an MMSC). It is usually in ProgramData\NowSMS.

(Some older installations have these configuration files mixed in Program Files\NowSMS.)

To migrate, simply copy the entire ProgramData\NowSMS structure to the new server.

(If configuration files are in Program Files\NowSMS, copy to ProgramData\NowSMS on the new machine.)

My advice would be to install NowSMS on the new machine first. Install the trial and then request the new activation code and make sure you don't have any problems there. (You can operate temporarily on a trial version, but the trial version may be have a slower limit than your license, so I suggest getting that sorted first.)

The new NowSMS install will create ProgramData\NowSMS.

Delete the files in that directory and copy contents over from the other server.

Hi Des,

Thank you for your quick response.

Let me reconfirm the steps

1. Install new NowSMS and then request activation code.
2. Delete all files in ProgramData\NowSMS
3. Copy all files from previous Program Files\NowSMS to ProgramData\NowSMS.

Does step no. 3 revert the version of the NowSMS to previous version of 2010.11.14? Or only certain files are to be moved?

Hi Adi,

That is correct.

The EXE and DLL files from the old Program Files\NowSMS are not needed and can be deleted after copying over the data structure to ProgramData\NowSMS.

On older versions of Windows (and NowSMS versions pre-2007), data was stored in the same directory as executable files.

This behavior is not allowed in newer versions of Windows, so the files have been separated. After copying from Program Files\NowSMS on the old server to ProgramData\NowSMS on the new server, the EXE and DLL files in ProgramData\NowSMS are not needed, as the ones from the program directory of the new install will be used.
