Hi,

I'm sorry, but I don't have any information on using any of the phones using the MS SmartPhone software as a GSM modem.

The first thing to check is does the phone have a connectivity option that allows it to be used as a modem for a laptop? If it does not, then it is not likely to work as a GSM modem for NowSMS.

If it can work as a modem for a laptop, then try adding the modem connection using NowSMS, and NowSMS will check to see if it supports the AT command set for sending SMS (this command set is known as ETSI GSM 07.05).

I checked the Orange web site for information on the SPV, and I didn't find anywhere that mentioned that the phone could be used as a modem for a laptop ... so I would doubt that the SPV would work. It's USB connectivity appears to be for sync only.

But other SmartPhone implementations might offer modem support.

Yes, Bryce, SPV have a modem and can be installed as one on laptops..

There's a USB and Serial connectivity options for SPV, i will try if this will work on your good product --NowSMS..

Many thanks!

Hi again Bryce!

I finally got the modem to work, installed as COM3 but sad to say that it cant accept other AT commands.

First, I tried sending an at on my Hyperterminal to see if it can accept..the replied is OK..but when I issue the commands like AT+CSQ, AT+CMGF=0, AT+GSMS, etc, etc, i got an ERROR response..

And now, I dont think that Smartphone can support GSM AT commands..

Any ideas?

Well, it does usually take Microsoft a few generations before they get a product right...

Unfortunately, it doesn't really surprise me that it doesn't work. With more and more of the various smart phones out there, this AT command support has been less robust than with dumber phones. For example, the SonyEricsson P800 also does not support these commands, and the Nokia Series 60 phones only support these commands for sending, but not receiving.

I'd suggest getting your hands on a dumber phone for use with NowSMS. SonyEricsson T68i's are good and getting cheaper these days (you may be able to find one used) ... just note that if you want to be able to receive MMS via the modem, you need a real GSM modem device, a phone as a modem won't do.

Thanks for that enlightenment Bryce..

Is the Falcom A2D modem enough for MMS sending/receiving?

Is Nokia 6210/7110 a good choice alternative to T68i?

thanks!

I don't have any personal experience with Falcom products, so I don't know about the differences between their different models. I do know of a customer that is using the Falcom Twist.

I visited the Falcom web site, and it is very cagey with any real details about GPRS support. I downloaded the AT commands specification for the A2D, and I did not find a single reference to GPRS or any GPRS related commands.

This seems to be a trend with GSM modems that are based on the Wavecom chip set. They claim to support GPRS, but then they do not seem to implement any of the interfaces for an application to actually interact with GPRS.

The A2D is based on the Wavecom chipset, while the Twist is based on Siemens chipsets. In particular, the downloads related to the Twist have AT command documentation from Siemens, and reference that they use the MC35 chipset. Many of our users are using the Siemens MC35 as a GSM/GPRS modem.

I'd try to confirm that if you purchase a Falcom modem that it implements the GSM 07.07 commands relating to GPRS. Specifically the AT+CGDCONT command, and ATD*99# to initiate a GPRS connection. If the modem is based on the Siemens MC35 chipset, it should be fine ... but I have some question about other models on their web site.

The Nokia 6210 and 7110 both make pretty good modems. The 6210 seems to be a little more stable based on my experience.
