Trying to set up the gateway to send SMS and MMS from email to phone. At this point I haven't registered any domain names for the system, so I thought of using IP-addresses. When enabling both SMS and MMS and entering the machine's IP address as the domain name (my only choice?), the system tells me that these names must be different. Does this mean that I need two IP-addresses on the machine? Any ways around this ?

When receiving an inbound SMTP message, the gateway decides whether to send it out as an MMS message or as an SMS message ... based upon the "domain" name part of the address on the inbound message.

Without that, you could really only test inbound to either MMS or SMS. (Unless you setup two IP addresses.) Even with that though ... not every e-mail server on the internet is consistent in its ability to send e-mail to username@ip.address.

Configured DNS for two different domains (hosts) pointing to the same ip-address, and it works fine. Can send SMS and MMS from both the web interface and from smtp. Also tried to configure a couple of SMTP users, but then I couldn't send sms to any of them. Isn't the purpose of defining the sms users to be able to send to @smsdomain ? Didn't work sending to @smsdomain either - as long as there were any users defined. The SMTP dialoge between the mailserver and the SMS/MMS gateway was fine.

Olaf,

That dialog is a little confusing. The ability to accept SMTP messages to be sent out to SMS was a last minute addition due to customer requests.

The "SMS Users" list actually specifies accounts that are allowed to submit messages into the NowSMS gateway. When you define a user on the "SMS Users" list, you specify whether they are allowed to submit new messages to the NowSMS Gateway via the web interface, SMPP and/or SMTP. It doesn't really affect the ability to receive messages, after all no phone number is associated with the entry.

The "MMS Users" list is for the MMSC. Users defined to that list can receive messages addressed to username@smsdomain or username@mmsdomain.

Still confusing.... Without any users defined under SMS Users, but some users defined under MMSC Users, I'm able to send email to @sms.domain.com and @mms.domain.com. If I enter any users into "SMS Users", I'm not able to send from email to sms or mms recipients.
When should users be defined under "SMS Users"? Is it when sending from sms to email, or 2-way sms?

Right,

As I mentioned above...

Defining a user to the "SMS Users" list basically provisions an account that is allowed to submit messages through the gateway. (E.g., login to the Web interface, login as an SMPP client, or login via SMTP Auth to submit messages.)

Does that clarify it any?

The terminology "SMS Users" vs. "MMS Users" admittedly is confusing. (It made sense until we added the configuration setting to allow SMTP e-mail to SMS recipients.)
