What version of NowSMS are you using?

If the modem tests ok with NowSMS after you run another application to access the modem, then you would probably be better off with NowSMS 2006.

Some GSM/GPRS modems need to be "woken up" before they will function properly. The NowSMS 2006 edition is better at waking up these sleeping modems.

Are you using NowSMS 2006 or are you using an earlier version? (There is an update patch for v5.51 at http://www.nowsms.com/download/latestpatch.zip which includes some, but not all, of the modem handling enhancements of NowSMS 2006, and it might fare better.)

Could you enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG? (Easiest way to do this is via the "Serial #" page of the configuration dialog.) I'd like to see if this provides us with any more clues.

It sounds like we've gotten past all of the initialisation issues, but the modem is returning an error when we try to actually send an SMS.

The SMSDEBUG.LOG should tell us more about the error, if the modem is actually returning any more info ... it might just return a response that only says "ERROR".

Here are some things that you can try ...

Try editing SMSGW.INI, and under the [Modem - PCMCIA GPRS Wireless Modem] header, add ModemTextMode=Yes. Restart NowSMS. See if this makes any difference. This tells NowSMS to use text mode for sending/receiving SMS instead of PDU mode. Of course, this limits you to only being able to send text messages (no binary messages), but I would be curious if you are then able to send messages.

If that works, but you need to be able to send binary messages ... then remove that ModemTextMode=Yes parameter. And we'll have to try to make some guesses. Show me your attempt from the SMSDEBUG.LOG, and we can try some tests in HyperTerminal to see if we can determine what's wrong with the modem.

Interesting.

That modem sure is returning a lot of unusual responses.

In particular, when we try sending a message, it returns "CMS ERROR: 33825".

That's definitely a non-standard error code. So I did some searching. And I found a manufacturer "Chi Mei Communications Systems" which has this error code defined for their GSM/GPRS modem. I'm not sure if your modem is related to this manufacturer's modems or not. But in the case of Chi Mei, this error code means that the mobile station is not registered.

This would suggest that the SIM card in the modem isn't able to register with an operators.

Let's try putting the SIM card into a mobile phone, and make sure that the phone can send an SMS ok using that SIM.

Unfortunately, I don't see any detailed technical information from the manufacturer.

I'm guessing that BVRP phone tools is using text mode for sending SMS instead of PDU mode.

That's why I suggested adding ModemTextMode=Yes under [Modem - PCMCIA GPRS Wireless Modem] header in SMSGW.INI.

Well, let me give you some things to try in HyperTerminal.

AT+CSMS=0
AT+CMGF=0

AT+CMGS=19
(modem should respond back with ">")
0001030B813000068386F3000006EBF01C9D3603 (press CTRL-Z)

I'm expecting the modem to respond back with "+CMS ERROR: 33825" like above.

So we could try text mode ...

AT+CSMS=0
AT+CMGF=1

AT+CGMS="03006038683"
(modem should respond back with ">")
this is a test (press CTRL-Z)

If text mode works here, then it sounds like "ModemTextMode=Yes" was not configured properly when you tried it above.

If both of these return an error, then all I can figure is that the modem wants the SMSC address to be explicitly set. Normally, the modem (or phone) will read the SMSC address from the SIM.

To set it manually, you would use AT+CSCA="+smscnumber".

It can be a bit difficult to figure out what SMSC number to use. The easiest way is to put the SIM into a phone, and check the SMS settings on the phone to locate the service centre address phone number.

Try sending this AT+CSCA= command using HyperTerminal to see if it makes any difference in the above tests.

NowSMS can be configured to send the SMSC number when it operates in normal PDU mode (not the special text mode setting that I described above). To configure this, you edit SMSGW.INI, and under the [Modem - modem name] header, add SMSC=+smscnumber

I haven't seen a GSM modem that required the SMSC address to be set in a few years, so I'd be surprised if this was the issue. But I can't think of what else it would be.

Hi Kashif,

I do not have an answer for you.

I've used a SonyEricsson K700i as a modem over Bluetooth with NowSMS, and it works great.

In your example, it appears that when we try to send an SMS message, the modem never responds back to indicate success or failure.

Can you send an SMS message from the SMS client in the phone?

What if you try connecting to the COM port of the modem using HyperTerminal like I described in the previous message. Does that work?
