Hi, in a previous thread eror 512 is listed as manufacturer sepcific - I wondered if there's any other info as to why this error would reported to the debug log when an SMS is sent to the SIM.

The modem is installed and tested fine (nowsms v5) but when I send a text to the sim installed in the modem I get a "ModemRecievesMessages: +CMS ERROR: 512"

Any ideas?

Thanks very much!

Sorry,
I forgot to add that the modem/sim are working fine with the supplied Novetel phonebook software - and that it's not running when I test the nowsms software.

Dan,

I see that error on a Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 when the modem is first starting up. The error goes away after several minutes.

Since you're looking at the smsdebug.log, could you tell me what you are seeing with in the log for responses to AT+CPMS=? and AT+CPMS? commands.

There is a configuration setting under "Properties" for the GSM modem in NowSMS. Try setting "SMS Message Storage" to "SIM Card" ... also try the "Device Memory" setting...and perhaps one of those settings will resolve the problem.

Hi,

Tried the "SIM Card" setting to no avail:

Re: AT+CPMS

in the log i see
ThreadProcessModem: AT+CPMS?
ThreadProcessModem:
+CMS ERROR: 512

and that's it.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

DAn

Dan,

Are you able to actually send any messages with NowSMS through the modem? Or is everything failing with this 512 error?

Is the SIM card configured to require a PIN? Can you remove the PIN?

Interestingly enough, I found a Novatel manual, and it also lists error 512 as "manufacturer specific".

I'm curious ... if you go into Hyperterminal, can you connect to the modem's COM port ... and do you see this "512" error if you issue the command AT+CPMS?

Also try AT+CMGL=0 ...

I'm just wondering. We had some issues with a Novatel G100 several months ago, and it didn't like how fast we were sending some commands, but I don't remember this being the error code. There is a pointer to a setting here: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/219.html

Hi,

Stupid question but how do I remove the PIN?

Also tried the oldmodem config to no avail.

I also forgot to add that I've tried my phone SIM in a wavecom modem with nowsms and that worked fine.

Also, am unable to send sms too.

Thnx again

Some additional:

Updated drivers to latest version: Still no joy and the 512 errors are present

but debug log now contains:

AT+CPMS="SM"
followed by the 512 error

By the modemmanager software for the novatel connects fine, shows signal strength at 25% and says the SIM has 4 text messages

If there is a PIN configured for the device, the easiest way to remove it is by putting the SIM into a phone and using the menus on the phone to remove the PIN.

Normally NowSMS will work just fine with a modem that has a PIN configured (just be sure to configure the PIN in NowSMS). But there are a few modems where the process of NowSMS sending the PIN does not work properly. That's why I just want to try to rule out PIN as an issue.

I'm curious about what the AT+CPMS? and AT+CPMS=? commands report.

These commands should be issued in the SMSDEBUG.LOG shortly after the modem is started.

Hi Bryce,

Thanks again for all your help - still no joy, but these are things I checked and tried over the weekend.

1: The SIM doesn't have a PIN set
2: I put the SIM in a 6310i connected it via a serial cable to my computer and it worked immediately no problem

3: Put the same SIM into the g201 modem and used the novatel modem tools. Connected find and recieved an SMS

4: Disconnected and started the Nowsms service,

This is the output of the debuglog - this message is iterated through the entire logfile over and over whether there is an SMS message waiting or not:

Dan,

This has really got me baffled. It is interesting to see that one command worked (AT+CPMS=?), while all of the others failed with this unusual error code.

I'd be curious if you can connect to the modem with HyperTerminal (Programs/Accessories/Communications/HyperTerminal). Connect to the COM port, not the named modem driver.

Issue the command ATV1E1 (this turns on echo if it is not on by default) ... and the modem should respond OK.

Then try the following commands:

AT+CSMS=0
AT+CMGF=0
AT+CPMS?

I'm curious if these commands return an error. And I'm curious if AT+CPMS? works when typed in via HyperTerminal vs. when we issue the command programmatically. If that's the case, maybe there is some sort of weird timing issue with that modem?

Hi Bryce,

just logged in via the Hyperterminal and got the following results:

AT+CSMS=0
+CSMS: 1,1,1

AT+CMGF=0
OK

AT+CPMS?
+CPMS: "SM",1,10,"SM",1,10,"SM",1,10

I'm guessing this will make sense to you as I've absolutely no idea what this means - I'm guessing this is the GSM protocol? ;o)

And, thank you very much, again!

Dan,

Apologies for the delay in responses this week.

My main curiosity in having you issue those commands is that I found it very odd in the log that you posted where we sent the command AT+CPMS? two different times and each time we got back an error message +CMS ERROR: 512.

Therefore, I wanted to see if something different happened when you manually typed in that same command via HyperTerimal.

This really has me puzzled. Unless the GSM signal reception for the modem is very poor, I can't imagine what else could cause this problem. Is there any chance that signal could be an issue?

I can only imagine a timing problem, where perhaps we are sending the commands too quickly, and the modem needs us to wait between commands.

I'm out of the office this week, but what I'd like to do is get a configuration parameter added to insert some timing delays, and see if that makes a difference.

Hi Bryce,

No worries for the delay.

The modem signal is a little weak but if we use the modem card's bundled software that works fine - i.e. send/receive.

Any help you can give us is greatly appreciated;

basically, we're evaluating the nowsms and merlin g201 cards as part of product bundle - if we can get it working we'd need about 200 licences. I guess we could go to the aircard but we'd really like to use the g201's as we've got a job lot ;o)

Dan,

I'm going to follow-up with you via e-mail.

I've got a version that will force a delay between commands, and I'm wondering if that will make a difference.

I'll send that to you via e-mail.
