Hey guys,

I hear it mentioned that SMS is a bearer interface, one that may be used to transport/deliver messages for WAP. But I also hear GSM and GPRS as bearer interfaces used to deliver messages for WAP.

Do you guys know what is meant by bearer interface, and how then SMS and GSM are related? I thought SMS was used by GSM (although it is network independent and can be used by other networks like TDMA and CDMA).

Thanks.

Toma

Toma,

The WAP WDP specification talks about different bearer interfaces.

With a lot of bearers (such as GSM data and GPRS), the underlying protocol is IP.

SMS can also be used (with different adaptations for GSM SMS vs. CDMA SMS), but SMS is primarily just used for push as it is not practical to transmit entire WAP protocol sessions over SMS.
