Hi, here is my dilemma. I am creating 2-way SMS applications. It seems as if I have 2 choices to deliver and receive my messages. First choice would be to connect with an aggregator using API + apply for short code. Second choice would be to send messages directly using a GSM modem. This leads me to question one: Which would you recommend for reliability and cost? I understand the costs associated with connecting to an aggregator; this leads me to question two: }What are the costs associated with sending/receiving with GSM modems? Thank you! James-

Hi James, Short codes are more expensive, but they are easier to advertise to users for commercial applications. Long numbers via a GSM modem (or sometimes through an SMS service provider) are less memorable, but work very well for more niche oriented applications. When sending/receiving SMS messages via a GSM modem, the rates are dependent on the rate plan to which you are subscribed. In most of the world, there is no charge for receiving SMS, only for sending. In the US, you are generally charged equally for both sending and receiving. -bn

Oh ... one other consideration ... Short codes are generally limited to use within a particular country. If you're running an event (like a conference) that draws participants from multiple countries, then a regular phone number can be desirable. |
