Hi, I am trying to configure NowSMS to deliver messages via SMPP. However I am recieving an error message saying "Unable to connect to server"

I have run NowSMS in debug mode and the log file says:

"22:15:55:228 ConnectToServer: Connection to server smpp.clickatell.com (196.7.150.220:2345) failed"

Not much help I am afraid!

Clickatell assure me that everything is set up correctly at their end and that it must be a problem with my application. If you can shed any light on this that would be much appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,

Oliver

Oliver,

That means that an IP connection could not be established.

It did not get as far as being able to even attempt a login.

Either you are having trouble because of a firewall on your end that is blocking the connection, or perhaps they do not have your IP address specified correctly on their end. (Most SMPP providers will accept connections only from a list of authorised IP addresses.)

Try connecting to that address via Telnet. Issue the command OPEN 196.7.150.220 235. I expect that after some delay, you will see an error message indicating that the connection could not be opened. This means that there is a problem at the TCP/IP level, as I described above.

Got it now, they have assured me that there firewall has been configured on port 2345 to allow my requests though and I can definitely ping their IP address from my server.

I have opened my firewall to allow all traffic through and I have even removed my firewall to ensure the blockage is not occuring at my end. I can certianly ping their IP...

When I initiate a telnet session, I cna connect fine and then the session times out after 2 mins (because I am not doing anything in there) no error message. Also the error message from NOWSMS is instanteous, indicating that it is not even attempting to contact the gateway.

Oliver

Oliver,

Ok, the fact that Telnet works is a good sign. If I try from my system, it comes back within a couple of seconds indicating that it could not open a connection to the host.

Stop the NowSMS service.

Go into the "SMSC" page of the NowSMS configuration. Highlight the entry and click "Properties". When you select OK from that next screen, NowSMS should attempt an SMPP connection.

Does that work?

If it does, I'm puzzled why it would work there, but not from the gateway itself?

I'd be interested in seeing an smsdebug.log for at least several minutes worth of activity.

Sometimes in the SMPP environment, after a connection is closed, the server will not allow another connection for a few seconds. So I could see that being a possible problem. But I would expect that we would retry and be able to establish a connection.

Maybe you could e-mail your debug logs to nowsms@now.co.uk, and I'll take a closer look. Perhaps I'll notice something subtle in the debug logs, but it really looks like an IP connectivity problem.

We are able to resolve smpp.clickatell.com to an IP address, but then the TCP connection to that port number is failing.

Maybe there's more in the log, so please send it to nowsms@now.co.uk.

Many thanks Bryce. I have been liasing closely with Lisa Smith with regards using NowSMS here in Australia. I will try the above and email them through to your email address... We want to ensure we can iron out these issues as soon as possible before we purchase the product.

Regards,

Oliver
