Hi Kuman,

My first suggestion is to verify that you are using the correct COM port for the modem. Often time, people experience this error because they forget that there is an internal modem in their computer, and they are accidentally trying to get NowSMS to talk to that modem instead of the GSM modem.

My second suggestion is to verify that you have properly installed the SIM card in the modem. Many modems will return this type of error if the SIM card is missing or not inserted properly.

My third suggestion is determine if there is a PIN set for the SIM card in the modem. Try putting the SIM card into a phone and see if you are prompted for a PIN code. If you are, while it is possible to configure a PIN code in NowSMS ... it is usually easier to troubleshoot if you remove the PIN before putting the SIM card back into the modem.

Finally, if everything seems ok with the above ...

You may want to try installing the NowSMS 2006 update at http://www.nowsms.com/download/patch2006.zip.

We have seen several problems in the last couple of months with Siemens MC35 modems ... in most cases, these were existing NowSMS installations that had been running ok for years ... and with no apparent changes, NowSMS began complaining that the modem did not support SMS.

This error is triggered by an unexpected error being returned by the modem during the initialisation phase. Why the error seems to have just started to occur in existing installations is a mystery. However, the patch for NowSMS 2006 that I referenced above includes a work-around to circumvent the error.

If after all of this, you are still getting nowhere, then I would advise you to go into HyperTerminal (Windows Start menu/Programs/Accessories/Communications), connect to the COM port, and issue the following commands (press Enter after typing each command):

ATZ
AT+CSMS=0
AT+CMGF=0

All of the above commands should return OK ... if they return an ERROR then NowSMS will complain that the modem does not support SMS.

If you are encountering an error, issue the following commands and reply back to indicate what responses you receive:

AT+CSMS?
AT+CSMS=?
