Hey Bryce,

I am in the US and I have a PC running NOWSMS trial 2006 version. I have 6 modems connected to it (1 Multitech GSM Serial and 5 Multitech GSM USB). I've set it to use "Direct to Modem" settings. I have keywords setup and scripts that are invoked when those keywords are received on 2-way. 3 modems have Tmobile and 3 have Cingular.

My question is:
1. Can I connect more than 6 modems to this PC/NOWSMS setup?
2. I read somewhere in this forum that per modem can handle 6-10 msgs per minute. Does this mean that since I have 6 modems, NOWSMS installed on my machine will handle a maximum of 36-60 msgs per minute (license permitting)?
3. Do you know if Tmobile or Cingular supports GPRS? If so, how do I setup NOWSMS to take advantage of this?
4. How do I verify if my Multitech modems are taking advantage of the "Direct to Modem" setting?

1. Yes
2. Yes (those are typical speeds for SMS over GSM)
3. This support, when available, seems to be regional. For example, a couple of years ago, we confirmed that on TMobile, it was available in Baltimore, but not in New York. Now it seems to not be available in Baltimore, but may be available elsewhere. I don't know for certain, but I think that with all of the unlimited SMS plans that they are offering in the states, they may be rolling back support for SMS over GPRS.
In NowSMS, you select SMS Access = GPRS under properties for the modem, and this configures the modem to try GPRS first, then fallback to GSM if GPRS not available. (But frequently the fallback does not work and sending fails.)
4. There is nothing really to verify. I can usually tell based upon a debug log, but if the modem doesn't support this mode, NowSMS falls back to default logic. This is normally not a problem, it is just slower at receivng, and MMS notification is sporadic with some carriers.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Is there a limit on how many modems that NOWSMS can work with or it doesn't matter as long as I can find a USB port to plug the modems into the machine? Is performance degraded when I have 10+ modems hooked up to NOWSMS?

Also, I was wondering if you can send me the most current price list. I sent an email a couple of days ago but I haven't received a reply. I'm just following up just in case my email didn't get through. Don't mean to rush if you guys actually received my email.

Thanks again for the great support.

Hi Ramon,

We don't impose a limit on the number of modems or SMSC connections (well, there is...but it is very high). Generally speaking, there is no performance hit as you add additional modems, because so much time is spent waiting on modem responses. So if Windows is content, NowSMS is happy to handle more modems.

I'm sorry that you haven't received pricing info...we have been having major problems with spam recently, and your message might have been deleted inadvertantly. If you send a message to nowsms@now.co.uk with "Attention: Bryce" in the subject line, it will get routed to me directly, and I will route it appropriately. Please let me know what country you are in.
