I am using a Novatell Wireless Merlin U630 PCMCIA UMTS Card to connect to a 3G network.

Using the accompanying MobiLink software that comes with the card, I can connect to the WAP APN and send/receive SMS (using the program).

However when trying to use this card with now SMS 2006 I get an error where it says the modem failed to initialize.

Oddly enough however if i start the MobiLink program, then while that is open, try and add the modem to NowSMS the modem will add successfully and then I can send SMS via this modem connection without problem.

This suggests there is a problem with the initialization string that is sent to the modem. It seems logical that I should just keep the MobiLink application open however it intercepts incoming MMS and SMS.

Is there a way to specifiy a default initialization string or command to a modem device, and anyone with any experience with the novatel merlin u630?

Attached is the SMSDEBUG.LOG file. I hope you can shed some light on this issue.

I don't see any modem initialisation failures in the log file ... what I do see is a failure to send any SMS messages, with "CMS ERROR 330" returned.

The 330 error indicates that the SMSC address is unknown.

This seems to happen quite a bit on 3G modems ... as if they are all using a common chipset that does not read the SMSC address from the (U)SIM card.

Here's a thread that explains how the "CMS ERROR 330" problem can usually be resolved:
