Hey Bryce,

I'm in the US and I am planning to buy a Sprint Smartphone, the ones you can hook up to your laptop and use as a broadband modem. This phone has SMS capability.

My question is, can I hook it up to my laptop where NOWSMS is running? I know this type of phone is not your typical modem like multitech, but will this setup work? I tried a CDMA multitech modem before but the modem did not respond to AT+CSMS and AT+CMGS even though SMS was actually supported. So I'm resorting to this plan.

Also, in NOWSMS, there is a "DIRECT to NOWSMS" setting that allows the messages to be delivered to NOWSMS as opposed to being buffered in the phone until the next "sync up". Am I right?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Ramon,

There are a growing number of phones that can be used as a data modem, but that do not support the AT command interface for sending/receiving SMS.

So just because the phone can be used as a modem, and the phone supports SMS ... does not imply that the phone can be used as a GSM modem for sending/receiving SMS.

This is true for Windows Mobile smartphones and Blackberry devices, where many newer models support being used as a data modem, but they cannot be used for sending/receiving SMS over the modem interface.

Since you're talking about a CDMA/CDMA2000 device, I would be very suprised if it supported the AT command set for SMS.

You should be able to get somewhere with the Multitech CDMA modem. What errors did you encounter? (We did notice some different handling of the AT+CSMS command in recent firmware versions of the modem, but updated NowSMS 2006 to handle this ... the latest update is at http://www.nowsms.com/download/2006patch.zip.)

Yes. (Although NowSMS does scan the phone quite frequently if this setting is not selected.)

Hey Bryce,

I tried the Multitech CDMA modem before but it didn't work. I bought a CDMA modem and a Sprint phone with a text plan. Once I had both, I followed the Multitech instructions to switch the ESN and ESL of the modem to the Sprint account. Still didn't work. I was using NOWSMS 2006 but to no avail.

I can't be the only person to use NOWSMS with Sprint CDMA. Have you or any of your subscribers have any experience with this setup?

Thanks.

Usually I hear about people using verizon with the modem, not sprint. I'd be curious to see any smsdebug.log files in order to better understand what errors occur.
