I am having problems connecting to a CDMA Based SMSC and will like to know what I am doing wrong and if the process used in connecting to GSM Based SMSC'S over an SMPP connection is any different from that of a CDMA based SMSC

I have been trying to use alternate methods of connection to the smsc and have tried using a CDMA Modem VTION-V1810 Wireless Modem and it appears as if the NOWSMS Gateway cannot see the modem as it keeps giving an error message which says "Modem does not support SMS" which is not true as the modem can send messages from its interface directly. Please advice on this and the other problems with the SMPP connection.

Hi Nii,

Apologies for the delay in response.

The issue here has nothing to do with whether the SMSC is CDMA or GSM ... basically the SMSC is not accepting the connection.

It could be an issue with the wrong IP address or port specified.

It could also be an issue with the wrong username and/or password being supplied. (Some providers will not return an SMPP error in this case, not wanting to provide any clues to port scanners that an SMPP server is listening.)

Most commonly, it is a firewall or IP address restriction issue. Usually, when this error occurs, it is a situation that the service provider has not authorised access for the IP address from which you are connecting.

Regarding the CDMA modem that you are attempting to use ... there is not a standard for modem commands used for sending/receiving SMS in the CDMA environment. Some CDMA modem providers have implemented their own proprietary protocols ... some have adapted the GSM modem protocols ... and some only support data connectivity without SMS.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any technical information on the VTION-V1810, so I do not know what modem protocols it uses. However, I assume from the error message that you are receiving that it does not support the GSM modem protocols.

I would be curious if you connected to the modem using HyperTerminal ... what response do you get to the "AT+CSMS?" command (ERROR ... or is there some other response?)
