We are looking to use the Now SMS gateway for our clients worldwide. I would like to have regional gateways that can communicate with multiple modems in each of the served countries. This means I want to use an Ethernet connection between the gateways and the modems. I am currently looking at the MultiTech modems. Does your software support Ethernet connections to these modems?

Hi John,

NowSMS cannot connect to a modem over TCP/IP (I say TCP/IP instead of ethernet, because I think that is more proper terminology for the type of configuration that you're talking about).

But you can use TCP/IP to connect multiple NowSMS installations with each other. If you are using modems, these modems would be locally attached to NowSMS at a particular location ... but then you would use SMPP (or HTTP if you wanted) to interface over the network to the different installations.

What I am trying to do is construct a SMS network of multiple modems connected to a single gateway where the modems are located in different countries without having to have them connected to PCs.

I know there must be devices much like Ethernet printer adapters that do serial over Ethernet. Are you aware of anybody that has used them for this purpose?

Thanks for your time.

Hi John,

To do this without a PC at the remote locations, it would be best if there was a driver that emulated a modem interface but redirected the request over TCP/IP to the remote modem.

(We could modify NowSMS rather easily to have it connect to the remote modems over TCP/IP directly, but we could only handle SMS sending/receiving ... not MMS. A modem driver would allow both SMS and MMS to be supported.)

I did a little web searching, and I think I may have found the product that you need. Give the following a look:

http://www.tacticalsoftware.com/products/serialip.htm

Even if you don't end up using NowSMS, I'd be interested in hearing how it works out. I'm thinking that we should probably look at adding ethernet modem support, even if we could only support it with the SMS part ...

Hi Bryce,

It seems that the Multitech, and I assume others use just the AT command set on the TCP/IP connection. If you want to take a look at the Multi-tech goto http://www.multitech.com/DOCUMENTS/Collateral/manuals/S000375A.pdf and scroll down to the page 13. Looks to me to be straight AT commands.

I appreciate your help. Our R&D group are evaluating NowSMS for the solution.

Hi John,

Yes, it does appear that it is just a straight AT command interface occurring over Ethernet instead of over the serial port.

That's why I believe it would be easy to adapt NowSMS to have an option to use this interface for sending/receiving SMS.

However, sending/receiving MMS over that same interface would be a major challenge. For that, we currently use Windows dial-up networking functionality to manage the IP layer. I've been going over that document, and I just don't have enough of an understanding of what happens when you activate the GPRS link ... it looks like the modem might handle the PPP authentication, and give you an IP tunnel. But it's not clear to me that this is how it works.

In any event, it's the MMS part of the equation that I'm hung up on. The SMS part is simple and well-defined.

Do you have one of these modems, or are you still contemplating? Maybe we could setup an arrangement that would allow us to test things out connecting through a modem on your end.

We do not have a modem today but will be getting one shortly. I would be happy to work with you on this once we have the device.

Drop me an email at john@voxiva.net and I will let you know when we are ready.

Thanks again for the advice.
