Hey, I'm thinking about trying to use NowSMS for a product we're developing, but am unsure as to whether it's even possible to find an HTTP SMSC which allows users to send MMS notifications in the United States? Can anyone recommend one? Is the only way to get a GSM modem?

Hi Moxie,

MMS notifications are tough in the US because there is no good way to get binary SMS messages to the CDMA carriers. (Cingular and T-Mobile are GSM ... Verizon, Sprint and Alltel are CDMA.)

Even with GSM modems, you cannot send binary SMS cross-carrier between Cingular and T-Mobile (at least this has been our experience).

There are SMS providers that can deliver these binary SMS messages to the GSM carriers ... Mobile 365 and Simplewire come to mind ... I believe mBlox and TCS can as well. Generally speaking, they use an SMPP interface, not an HTTP interface.

GSM/GPRS modems tend to be the way to go with MMS in the US, because the operators are interconnected for MMS exchange, and you don't have any GSM vs. CDMA issues if you go this route. I believe Cingular has more interoperability than T-Mobile ... last I saw, T-Mobile did not interconnect with Verizon, but Cingular does interconnect with all of the majors.

When you say that GSM modems are the way to go because operators are interconnected for MMS exchange, are you suggesting that there's a way to send MMS from GSM modems without using binary SMS? Like talking directly to my provider's MMSC somehow, which then does MM7 cross-carrier? And this works for delivery to CMDA networks as well? How does that interface with NowSMS?

Thanks for the help,
