Hello,

We provide SMS service on several countries and with many operators. As we know, the network of operators could be down from time to time. Sometimes the delay between sending and receiving could be a few hours, which makes SMS test become time-consuming and frustrate.

Is it possible to create an auto-test system, then we just need to check log if every test is done, which one is failed.

There is no problem to make a small program on PC to schedule tests and execute them, but I need to be able to send those test messages from different operators (like the SMS is sent from a mobile handset). First I thought GSM modem could do this job, but for one modem I can only put one sim card. If I want to do auto-test on all operators, I need a modem for each, right? then it becomes a bad solution.

Please let me know I am wrong and there are better solutions.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

If you wanted to actually test "real world" sending to a handset on a particular operator's network ... then yes, you would need one modem for each SIM card.

I don't know that I would necessarily say this is "bad", as I don't know how else you would expect to accomplish this. All of the modems could be connected to a single PC.

Hello Bryce,

Thanks for your answer. If I just need to test on 2, 3 operators, this solution is perfect. But I need to test on 50 even hundred operators, connect 50 modems to a single PC is not possible.
But if I don't do that, I need to change sim card when one test is finished. Then it's not auto-test any more.
Any suggestion?

Hi Juan,

50 or 100 SIMs would be an issue. I assumed you were just looking at within a single country, but I guess you could do this international as you're generally not charged for receiving SMS when roaming (or are you ... does this policy vary with different operators and different countries?)

I wouldn't want to have 100 modems attached to a single PC. And you'd probably have to go USB to reach a number that large ... and I wouldn't trust USB drivers to be stable with that many devices.

So, you'd probably need to spread the modems across multiple PCs, adding to the cost ... and you've already got the cost of all of the modems.

Bottom line, it would be relatively expensive. I can't think of any other approaches ...

Hello Bryce,

Thanks a lot. Now I am clear about what can be done and what cannot be done for the auto test.

Regards,
Juan

BTW, just for information. The user could be charged for receiving free SMS/premium SMS when roaming, for example, UK operator, O2.
