There are others, but here are my personal preferences:

Our preferred modem is the Siemens MC35 (which unfortunately does not support the GSM frequencies in the US, but works in Europe/Asia/Africa).

The Sierra Aircard 750 is a good PC card.

For phones, the SonyEricsson T68i is a good one. (There is a limitation using a phone as the modem in that it can send/receive SMS, but it can only send MMS. A phone cannot be used as a modem for receiving MMS.)

Historically Wavecom makes a good GSM modem.

For sending/receiving SMS, they are great.

I don't think that Wavecom makes any tri-band or quad-band GSM modems. So they have separate models for the US and Europe/Asia. (Make sure you are getting a version with 1900Mhz support for use in the US.)

The primary problem that we have seen with Wavecom modems is a lack of support for GPRS standards in their GSM/GPRS modems. If you are going to be using GPRS functionality for sending or receiving MMS messages through an operator MMSC, then apparently you will need a firmware update.

Here's a link to a discussion thread that discusses the firmware update:

Hi all,

I want to use a Motorola phone as a modem. Does anyone know if there is a Motorola phone good as a modem?
Thanks!

Hi,

For whatever reason, Motorola seems to be behind other manufacturers when it comes to including this GSM modem capability in their phones.

From past posts, I have seen someone using NowSMS with the Motorola P260, which did work.

But I have seen postings from others who have tried the T720, T720i, and C350, which did not work.

Check the specifications for any Motorola models that you are interested in to see if they support ETSI GSM 07.05 (sending and receiving SMS via AT commands).
