Hello,

This morning I experienced some issues with the MMSC. It was receiving all messages but wasn't delivering the notifications. I restarted the SMSC and MMSC services and all queued messages were delivered.

I would like to know which are the vital processes that we could check on and monitor to avoid losing service.

What could have beenn the reason of this incident?

Regards,

Hi Alma,

There are two services, the SMS service (name "nowsms") and the MMSC service (name "nowmmsc").

It sounds like the SMS service was stopped.

If the MMSC was still accepting messages, then the MMS notification messages would be in the outbound SMS queues.

I am wondering if the SMS service had been stopped. (Normally it is configured to restart itself automatically if there is a critical failure, so that you would not need to manually restart it.)

Our normal advice for checking to see if the service is running is to try connecting to the web ports of the SMS gateway and the MMSC. You can usually configure web monitoring software to make simple HTTP requests to test if the service is active, like you can use web monitoring software to test a web server.

The SMS gateway uses the "port number for web interface" setting on the "Web" page of the NowSMS configuration. The MMSC uses the "HTTP Port Number" on the "MMSC" page of the NowSMS configuration.

But it sounds like something else was occurring on your system. To watch for it possibly happening again, you might want to configure a "message queue size alert", which sends an e-mail if there are more than a configured number of messages in the outbound SMS message queue. This can be set under the "Manage Alerts" button on the "Service" page of the configuration dialog in NowSMS.
