If you want to use a phone as a modem, then my only recommendation is that you avoid Motorola phones, as most Motorola phones have a bug in their GSM modem interface which prevents them from sending any SMS messages that includes a user data header (UDH). And the port information is encoded in the user data header.

If you have to use a phone as a modem, most SonyEricsson and Nokia phones support a GSM modem interface ... however most of the newer Nokia phones can be used for sending only (not receiving).

Also, just a note for others ... there is more general info on sending to a J2ME app here: http://blog.nowsms.com/2007/06/send-sms-to-java-appmidlet.html
