hi, ive hit a snag with your gateway.

ive been testing using a panasonic gd87, connected via cable to the pc, with no problems sending sms.

but ive connected a nokia 6310i now, again via a cable, have installed all drivers correctly, windows sees it as a modem fine, and nowsms tests the modem and says it is fine.

but when i send an sms my smsdebug.log reports this:

13:01:14:173 [4] ThreadProcessModem: OUT: 0001000C81449791638792000004F4F29C0E
13:01:18:719 [4] ThreadProcessModem: ERROR - Modem Response (2): +CMS ERROR: 500
13:01:18:719 [4] ThreadProcessModem: Error: ERROR - Modem Response (2): +CMS ERROR: 500
13:01:18:800 [4] ThreadProcessModem: Processing 3E8C2E4D.req...
13:01:18:800 [4] ThreadProcessModem: OUT: AT+CMGS=21

13:01:18:880 [4] ThreadProcessModem: IN:

any ideas what this means,

thanks for your help, joe.

Hi Joe,

Unfortunately, when a GSM phone/modem returns the dreaded "+CMS ERROR: 500" message ... this literally translates to "unknown error".

I see this sometimes with my SonyEricsson T68i when it falls out of coverage (I've got bad GSM reception in my office).

And I've also seen it a couple of times when sending to an invalid address.

I'm not sure if the 6310i has a setting for sending SMS over GPRS ... but if it does, you might want to try disabling that setting.

I assume that you've tried sending an SMS message via the user interface on the phone? (This would help ensure that the SMSC number is not configured incorrectly for some reason, or that there is not some other account or phone configuration problem.)

Try sending from the user interface on the phone to that same phone number ... (looks like "447919367829"?) Out of curiosity, have you tried putting a "+" in front of the phone number when you send out the message? (Without the plus in place we send the message to the SMSC telling it that the phone number is in national format ... with it we tell the SMSC it is in international format. I'm thinking that maybe that could be an issue here.)

In very rare instances, it can be necessary to set the SMSC address when you're actually sending a message. The SMSC address varies depending upon what operator you are subscribed to. The only time I've ever seen it required by a NowSMS user was with a user who had an Ericsson DI28 modem which is an external snap on infrared modem that attaches to some Ericsson phones.

You can set the SMSC address by manually editing the SMSGW.INI file. Under the section header for the modem configuration, add SMSC=+phonenumber, where "+phonenumber" is the address of the SMSC. Here's a link to a good list of SMSC phone numbers: http://www.cellular.co.za/smsc_lists.htm. But you can also usually find the phone number by looking in the SMS configuration on the phone (unless for some reason it is screwed up). When you enter the SMSC phone number, always start it with a "+" and don't include any other non-numeric characters (no dashes or dots) in the address.

If you try setting the SMSC value by manually editing SMSGW.INI ... if the setting doesn't make a difference, always go back in and remove it immediately so that it doesn't confuse things down the road.

I doubt that setting the SMSC address will make a difference. I mention that mainly for future reference of people reading these threads, just to exhaust possible solutions. A 6310i should read the SMSC setting automatically from the SIM.

I'd suspect the issue is the phone number format not being international ... or a coverage issue.
