Hey Bryce,

I am using NowSMS on an WinXP box with a Nokia 6210 connected to it. It works great for sending and receiving plain old txt sms. I have about 15 phones being used as a modem on this box. Several times a day, I get this error

("Error initializing SMSC Interface 'Modemname here'. Interface is not available")

which requires unplugging the phone from the USB port and restarting the NowSMS service or in some cases, uninstalling the phone from Device Manager/Phones and Modems and from NOWSMS gateway and reinstalling it. I am hoping you can tell me what is going on here and help us fix it. I have another box that have Multitech GSM modems in it and it too gets this error but on a less frequent basis.

What triggers this error and any guidance on how to fix it? Please let me know.

Thanks in advance.
RS

Hi RS,

This error basically means that we tried to open a connection to the device, and we couldn't.

I would expect you to see the same results if you tried to access the modem from another application.

I've never seen this problem happen on any of our test machines (I can, of course, get this error message by turning off or unplugging a device). So I don't have any good ideas about resolving this problem if you are experiencing it ... other than removing the relevant USB drivers, re-installing, and checking to see if there are any updated drivers available.

Actually, I do have one other thought ... NowSMS specific.

I remember we were troubleshooting a problem with a Sony laptop that had a built-in GSM/GPRS/EDGE modem. Consistently if NowSMS was running as a service, it would not find this modem when the machine first started up. The only solution was to stop NowSMS and restart it.

We found that NowSMS only scans for available Windows modems at start up time, and it won't detect new modems that are added once the NowSMS service is already running.

If there's a problem with the USB connection to the modem that is causing Windows to remove the modem and then re-add it, NowSMS might not detect the re-added modem.

If a NowSMS service restart alone resolves the problem, then any NowSMS version since 2007.03.09 might recover better.

However, if recovery requires that the modem actually be removed and plugged back in, then something is going wrong in the Windows drivers. And unfortunately, I don't have any good ideas on how to troubleshoot that.
