Hi there, I've not posted here for a while but I have a new project that will require use of NowSMS in a public sector application.

Basically I need to know the kind of throughput and max load figures for the NowSMS application. Our requirement is to support several thousand users to receive SMS notification (and eventually MMS too). This all has to be over a secure link.

Also I need to find out the procedure for implementing a redundant NowSMS installation. Our client has stipulated that any solution to their requirement is not only secure but also has redundancy to minimise the risk of downtime (we're talking emergency services here).

Many thanks, Ian.

Hi Ian,

The througput bottleneck is usually with the SMS provider.

It's really a question of how many messages per second you can route through the provider. In most cases, you run into limitations with the connection to the provider before you run into limitations in NowSMS.

For highest throughput, you want to use an SMPP connection, and you want to enable "async mode" under the "Advanced Settings" for the connection in NowSMS.

On our price lists, we go up to 200 messages per second, although we have worked on some installations that exceeded this.

Because of provider limitations, exceeding these limits generally requires multiple provider connections. A lot of providers top out at 50 to 60 messages per second on a single connection.

The following PDF has some information about redundancy:

For people who are familiar with NowSMS, this link has helpful information about migrating to a multi-server redundant environment:
