Hello -

We are evaluating your server product and experiencing some trouble. We have a GSM celluar modem which we have installed and tested. The trouble we are having is that the system does not seem to check for messages unless we manually click on the SMSGWS.EXE file located in the installation root! We have selected the check boxes to have the system run as a service...but no luck. If we make a change to the configuration the process of saving the changes kills the SMSGWS.EXE file...then we must start it again for the server to work. Have we missed something?

Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Mike,

You should NOT run SMSGWS.EXE manually (it is not designed to run that way).

When you configure NowSMS to run as a service, SMSGWS.EXE (and SMSGWNT.EXE) are launched as processes in a service context on the computer.

I would suggest that you enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG (checkbox on the "Serial #" page of the configuration dialog). Run NowSMS as a service, do whatever you're trying to do ... and then reply back here with details from your SMSDEBUG.LOG.

When you say the "system does not seem to check for messages" ... are you talking about outbound messages to be sent, or received messages?

One of the common problems with received messages is that if you setup a 2-way command that displays a message box or prompts for user input (or you run cmd.exe without the "/c" parameter), the command is running in background service mode on the computer, and you never see that the command is waiting for additional input. By default, when NowSMS spawns a 2-way command, it waits up to 5 minutes for that command to finish before it processes the next message.

Maybe that is what you are encountering, but I really don't have a good enough picture of your configuration or what you are trying to accomplish ... so that's just my best guess.

Hi There..the system does not query the modem at all. When I last looked at your product (3 years ago) I could see the modem lights flashing every few minutes to check and see if there were any new messages to download. Currently the system sits at a standstill until the SMSGW.EXE is clicked and launched. There are no 2 way commands set up.

I also experience an error when trying to launch the NOWSMS web interface. When I click on the shortcut in the program group I get an error message stating that the service is not running.

I am out of the office and unable to send the log, I will try and upload in the morning.

The machine I am testing it on had a prior version of NOWSMS from our last test...is there something that could be left over from the previous install that is hampering with the service?

Any other thoughts?

It is possible that there could be a problem related to a previous trial. The service may think that the trial period is expired ... although it is unusual that the configuration program would not report the same problem.

That said, we have seen issues like this on Vista (although they should be resolved in the latest version).

For now, let's go with the theory that this is the problem. I'll issue you an extension code.

Send an e-mail to nowsms@nowsms.com with (Des) somewhere in the subject line (put parentheses around my name). In the text of the message, remind me that you posted on the discussion board and that I need to send you a trial version extension code. From the "Serial #" page of the NowSMS configuration program, include your "Installation Reference Code", a I'll need this in order to be able to send an extension code.
