Will the Hutchison 3G phones support MMS messages from the NOWSMS gateway?

To be completely honest, I don't know.

Is there any SMS interoperability between the existing UK networks and the 3 network?

And an update...

We picked up a Hutchison 3G phone over the weekend, and will be taking a closer look at it.

At first glance, it seems to have MMS settings just like in the GSM/GPRS world. We just need some time to play with it and figure out the quirks.

The big question will probably hinge on SMS interoperability.

The primary SMS provider that we use at present does not seem to have interoperability with 3 ... which makes it tricky to get the MMS notification message into a 3 phone.

we tried sending to a H3G phone and the wap push notification arrived but the phone was unable to retrieve the mms message... haven't really gone into any detail with the results and error messages.

That's probably the same type of situation as with Orange in the UK.

The Access Point configured for use by the MMS client most likely has firewall restrictions for where it can connect to.

Hi, Bryce:

Do you mean you use a GSM phone as the wireless modem for NowMMSC? How about using SonyEricsson's Z1010 as a GSM Modem? Thanks in advance.

Hi Joe,

You certainly can use a GSM phone as the wireless modem.

SonyEricsson phones generally have a good GSM modem interface, so the Z1010 would probably work when released.

As long as there is binary SMS interoperability between the networks, however, even a non-3G phone should work.

I've set some time aside next week to play with a 3 phone myself, so we'll see I can determine what the issues are with some hands-on experimenting.

Hi, Bryce:

We are going to do a SMS test in a pure 3G network. Do you think it is OK with two Z1010? I mean use one Z1010 connected with nowsms, and another to receive SMS? Thanks for your reply and looking forward to your experimenting result and further answer.

Joe,

I would expect that to work as long as the Z1010 impliments the SMS related AT commands defined in GSM ETSI 07.05 (or 07.07).
