I can send e-mail message out to the internet from my phone by sending an MMS message to an e-mail address. (I configured my mail server to relay mail for the Now SMS/MMS gateway PC's IP address.)

But I don't understand how to route e-mail back in from the internet to the gateway. Help?

Hmm ... from our experience it is often trickier to get the mail routed out, since you have to configure a mail server to relay on your behalf.

Getting mail in is a matter of getting an entry setup in internet DNS, so that the domain name that you want to use for MMS e-mail is defined in internet DNS. This domain can be a subdomain of your existing domain (e.g., mms.domain.com).

In DNS, you need to setup an "MX" (Mail eXchange) record for this domain or subdomain. The MX record points to an "A" (host name) record which has the IP address of your gateway.

I hope that helps.

In the meantime, something else you could play around with is configuring a separate e-mail identity in your e-mail client. You need to define a dummy entry for your inbox (any valid account will do, you're really just setting this profile up to send) ... and then configure your SMTP server to be the IP address of the NowSMS gateway. Using that profile in your e-mail client, you can send SMTP messages directly to the NowSMS gateway. Note that the NowSMS gateway will only accept messages for recipients that are defined to it (e.g., account@mms.domain.com), so you don't want to try to send other e-mail messages via this path.

We had trouble getting the SMTP server part of the Now MMSC working. We sent a couple of http formatted messages to account@mms.domain.com from Outlook Express and somehow the NOW MMSC SMTP server got stuck in a fatal loop in start up:-

16:23:05:343 [0] main: Now MMSC Web server started on port number 8001
16:23:07:366 [0] main: 33 Days remaining in trial version
16:23:07:376 [4] UnhandledExceptionFilter: Exception occurred in thread #4

We deleted all the files in the nowSMS/MMSCIN directory and the MMSC server and SMTP server could then start up ok.

Yikes!

We did have a problem like that in the v3.0 release (the first release with MMS support).

It was a stupid MIME parsing error that was the result of a relative "last minute" change before release.

Make sure you've got v3.10.

If you have v3.10, and you have a problem message like this, we'd desperately like to see the message file to understand what is failing!

The problem that Steve mentions can also be a problem if you're running v3.0 of the gateway.

I confirmed with him that he's got v3.0, and is installing an upgrade. So you might want to check the version that you have. v3.10 is what is current.

However, if you can send e-mail from the phone, but not back to the phone, then it sounds like you've got a DNS configuration issue.
