Hi Brian, Are you referring to one of the Microsoft SmartPhone models made by HTC? I'm not sure that any of the MS SmartPhones actually support the AT command set for sending/receiving SMS as defined in ETSI GSM 07.05. As the phones get smarter, this seems to be one of those supposedly dumb features that they leave out. (The SonyEricsson P800/P900 also do not support these functions. And the Nokia Series 60 phones support the functions for sending only, not receiving. So if using a phone as a modem, you are usually best off with more of a middle-of-the-road phone, or a dedicated GSM modem device.) To confirm that this is the case, go into HyperTerminal (Programs->Accessories->Communications->HyperTerminal), and connect to the COM port. Hit enter a couple of times, and then type ATZ and press enter. If it is a modem, then it should respond back with OK (which it appears that your modem is doing). Next, type AT+CSMS=0 and press Enter. Then type AT+CMGF=0 and press Enter. If either of those commands return an ERROR then the SMS commands are not properly implemented in the phone. -bn

I'm not aware of any GSM modem under the Apache brand. The fact that you mention "v90" makes me think that you are referring to a standard PC modem, and NOT a GSM modem. A GSM modem is a specialised type of modem device which operates on the GSM mobile network. It accepts a SIM card, just like a GSM mobile phone, and that SIM card must be activated for service with a GSM mobile phone provider. -bn

I have a Sony Ericsson P900 which apparently does not support SMS. Is there an off the shelf gsm modem any one can recommend that will do the job?

See http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/3255.html for a discussion of some phone as modem options and more discussion of the P800/P900 issue. For off the shelf, GSM modems, I like the Siemens MC35 Terminal (external), and Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 (PC card). -bn |
