Hi All,

I have been reading for a few days now and just setting up, newbie.

I have Motorola V120C CDMA phone that is SMS capable. When adding it as a GSM modem to NOWSMS, the software detects and queries the modem no problem and then returns an error 'modem does not support SMS'?

I am assuming that the phone has to be a digital GSM phone in order to work?

TDMA or CDMA SMS ready phones operating on digital PCS networks will not work even though they have cross network(CDMA phone sending SMS message to GSM phone)SMS capabilities?

I am going to test with GSM phone that supports SMS tomorrow, I just wanted to know from you guys if CDMA/TDMA phones that support SMS(two way sms capable phones)will work?

Thanks, Digs.

Hi Digs,

I can tell you that definitely a CDMA phone will not work at this present time. There is a different specification for the SMS modem interface in the CDMA environment. We're investigating this support for the future.

TDMA is a question mark ... the standard that we are using for the modem interface is a GSM standard, defined in ETSI GSM 07.05. TDMA is very closely related to GSM, but I'm not sure that any TDMA phones implement this specification. There are a number of combination TDMA/GSM phones ... and it may be worth trying one of the Nokia models.

Even within the GSM world, not all GSM mobile phones implement the ETSI GSM 07.05 interface. Nokia and SonyEricsson GSM phones are usually pretty good about implementing this interface ... I've also used the Panasonic GD87.

Hi Bryce,

Thanks for the reply, here is an update.
I got hold of a different phone, Motorola Timeport 280, World Phone using GSM 900, 1800, 1900 networks. Same response from NOW SMS. The sw finds the modem, initializes it no problem but then responds back with error 'modem does not support SMS'?

Is this a motrola thing? Has anyone got any motorola phones to work? I'm probably going to go out and buy a Nokia GSM world phone, here are my choices.

Nokia 3590
Dual-Band, Single Mode Digital GSM Phone
Two-Way SMS capable

Nokia 6310i
Tri-Band, Single
Mode Digital GSM
Phone
Two-Way SMS
capable

Nokia 8390
Single Band, Single Mode Digital GSM phone, Two-Way SMS capable

Any thoughts much appreciated, thanks, Digs.

Update:

I just tested with a Nokia 9290 GSM1900 and it works fine. Will probably buy the 6310i as the others do not have data connectivity from what I can tell. Anyone know if a Nok 6310i is good to go?

Thanks, Digby

Sony Update:

Now have Sony Ericsson T300, Tri-Band(GSM 900/1800/1900) single mode digital GSM phone and it appears to work great! Charger and data cable plugged in at the same time also. I am yet to try MMS properly, any feedback very welcome, we need to build a list of phones and wavecom modem model numbers that appear to work well globally with nowsms. The wavecom fastrack model numbers are a tad confusing as which one to order?

Thanks, Digby.

Hi Digby,

Sorry that I was off-line for several days here ... we got backed up with e-mail technical support.

I don't know what it is about the Motorola phones, but very few of them seem to support the AT command set for sending SMS.

On the Wavecom front, I've searched through our e-mail tech support to see what people who have contacted tech support seem to be using successfully.

Most people seem to be using the M1213A, although I also see a reference to the M1203A.

I also see quite a few references that don't list the model number ... and quite a few that refer to the WMOD2.

I'd recommend getting a modem that supported GPRS as well as GSM. It is not strictly necessary, but when we release v5.0, a GPRS modem will offer some additional configuration/connectivity options.
