Well, I'd suggest you start by downloading a copy of the EMS and SEO specifications.

There is probably an official site from which the SEO specifications can be downloaded, but I found it here:

http://home.yole.ru/_files/ota_specification_release1.0.2.pdf

EMS specifications are part of the 3GPP TS 23.040 specification.

Release 5 specs for EMS can be found here:

ftp://ftp.3gpp.org/Specs/2001-12/Rel-5/23_series/23040-520.zip

Release 4 specs for EMS can be found here:

ftp://ftp.3gpp.org/Specs/2001-09/Rel-4/23_series/23040-440.zip

Both of the above specs are for SMS in general, and the official EMS specs are part of those specifications. For more direct information on EMS, try the developer area of the SonyEricsson web site.

Out of curiosity, why did you think that replying to a message on this discussion board would cause a picture to be sent out to your phone?

I'm just curious if there is anything that we could do to avoid this type of confusion as we get several pictures posted to this forum every week ...

Is there any tutorial available which describes how I can send pictures using AT commands?

Probably ... but I'm not aware of one.

What you have to keep in mind is that you are mixing several different issues together.

First, you talk about sending messages using AT commands. If you want to learn about this, then you need to study the ETSI GSM 03.40 and ETSI GSM 07.05 specifications, which you can find on the http://www.etsi.org web site.

Next, you need to realise that there are multiple different encodings for "picture messages".

Black and white (monochrome) picture messages are generally in one of the following formats:

Nokia Smart Messaging
EMS
Siemens SEO

The Nokia Smart Messaging specification applies to Nokia phones only (although some phones from other manufacturers also support parts of this spec). The Nokia specification can be downloaded from http://www.forum.nokia.com.

The EMS specification was developed by (Sony)Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens and Alcatel, and has since been supported by a number of other manufacturers, and written in as part of the SMS standard. A link to the EMS specs can be found earlier in this message thread.

Siemens SEO is for Siemens phones only. A link to the SEO spec can be found here: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/3005.html

Then, when you start talking about colour images, you're talking about using MMS and WAP Push. And that gets more complicated.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to write a full tutorial ... as I've got to get back to my real purpose in these forums, which is to support customers and prospective customers of our Now SMS/MMS Gateway product.

Without internet access on your phone, that probably does limit what is available to you.

The X426 does support EMS ... so EMS format ring tones should be supported by that device. (EMS is the format used most frequently for SonyEricsson phones, where iMelody tones are sent over EMS.)
