I'm not sure where the problem is, but when I send a 2 line text message, it appears on the phone as a single line.

I'm using the NowSMS web interface via cingular. My SMSC is http://208.62.68.135/msgresult.shtml?min=@@PhoneNumber@@&msg=@@Text@@.

I've tried it directly in my browser, too using the URL escape sequence of %0D%0A. This doesn't work either. I'm wondering if it's my phone.

Can you send a message including those characters when sending through Cingular's web form directly?

As that web form is probably expecting only text input, it might strip those characters.

What happens if you use the T616 as a GSM modem (serial or USB data cable; or via bluetooth) ... that would give more direct control over message formatting.

You're right Bryce. It doesn't work going directly through Cingular's page either.

The cingular SMS URL format is straightforward; driven by query string vars. Although the URL accepts messages with embedded %0D%0A, it does not come across as 2 lines. It seems like all whitespace chars are translated to blanks.

I've tried a mobile-to-mobile SMS and it works fine. My goal is to send plain text vcards from my pc to my handset via the web.

Is there an alternate server I can use for Cingular U.S?

Hi Peter,

I'm not aware of any free SMS links with any more flexibility. Usually you are limited to what the mobile operator offers (and the mobile operator offering such a capability doesn't happen very often outside of the US I should mention for others that read this thread).

Do note that different types of phones handle vcards differently. SonyEricsson phones (and some others) accept vCards in a simple text message, as long as you can get the CRLF in the text.

However, Nokia phones require that they be sent as a binary message using the method for sending vCards that is specified by the WAP specifications (we have a separate menu option in our web interface that sends out a binary format in that format).
