Hi All,

Quick question, just need to check.
I am testing sending of mms + content files - the problem is I only have access to one phone and that phone is being used as my modem for NOWSMS. So, even though I am sending notifications and phone is receiving them, when it comes to downloading mms content file I get a network error - this is because I'm using the same phone to send right? I need a second phone to test this right? Or can you do this and I have another problem?

Thanks for all your worldly help and advice.

Digs.

Update: Just discovered my carrier does not support MMS at the moment, explains a few things I guess. My original question still stands though. Can I use the SAME GSM modem to connected to the gateway to send and receive MMS messages or do I need a seperate GSM phone?

Thanks, Digby.

Hi Digby,

The only thing that the carrier needs to have support for in order to enable MMS ... is a the ability to support data connections (GSM dial-up or GPRS ... although some Nokia phones only support MMS over GPRS) ... and somewhere in the mix there needs to be a WAP gateway that can support larger content downloads for MMS.

(On the WAP gateway front, if your operator does not have a compatible WAP gateway, you can use our public WAP gateway at 213.48.20.10.)

Basically, when you send an MMS message to another device, what you are doing is sending a specially formatted binary SMS message that includes a URL pointer to the location of the actual content of the MMS message.

The recipient device receives the notification, and then downloads the URL over a WAP session. So the receiving device needs to be able to initiate a connection from the phone that connects to a WAP gateway and the WAP gateway needs to be able to then download the MMS message file from your MMSC.

The mobile phone has separate WAP settings for MMS messaging vs. the WAP browser, so you'd need to check your phone configurations to see what is going on there.

There is no problem sending an MMS message to the same phone that is connected to the gateway. It's a good test to get started.

Take a look at the Installation Guide (also known as the Getting Started Guide here on the web site) for some more pointers in this area.
