In a previous communication I got information that this gateway could be used to eliminate the "cross-operator" problem that seems to be present among most operators (i.e. a user connected to operator A can't send MMS to a user connected to operator B).

Is there an explanation how this could be done? Does the gateway have to use its own modems in order to do this, or could it use a SMPP connection to the operator(s)?

Hi Olaf,

I thought I had replied to this yesterday, but I don't see my post out here. (Must have forgot to click Post after the preview message came up.)

Basically, we send MMS notification messages through SMS. So if you have SMS interconnectivity between the operators based on the GSM modem(s) attached to the system, that can be used to transmit MMS.

You can run into some potential issues where some operators are deploying ring-fenced MMS configurations, where they have a special WAP profile and APN for their MMSC that only connects to their MMSC. But if you use a regular WAP profile (as long as the WAP gateway supports SAR - segmentation and re-assembly), then you're generally ok. (Orange UK, one of the ring-fencers, currently has a production WAP gateway for non-MMS traffic that does not support SAR. If you run into a situation like that, you need to use a GPRS APN that provides public internet connectivity and a WAP gateway that supports SAR like the public gateway we have up at 213.48.20.10.)
