This i believe a million dollar question and this has been bothering in my mind for very long time since sms started in business. I would just like to know where does the messages go after deleting it from your phone inbox. and is there a way the service provider can retrieve it back?

Generally speaking, there is not a way to retrieve the message.

But that does not mean that it is impossible to retrieve it. An operator is generally going to have a log that shows where the message came from. If the message was routed via one of the operator's SMSCs, then the operator might have a log on the SMSC that details the message content.

If the message came from an external SMSC, the operator might have less information ... but would have a record that the external SMSC connected in to deliver a message to a particular handset. (And it may then be possible that the external SMSC provider has some type of detailed log of message traffic.)

Generally speaking, the message is removed from the operator's SMSC as soon as it is delivered to your handset. At that point, it resides only on your phone (or sometimes on the SIM card in the phone). When you delete the message from your phone, it's gone ... but traces of it may still remain in the network.
