Can anyone let me know if they are using these phones as modems for the NowSMS gateway.

I have tried to connected both and they are both giving 'Doesn't support SMS' errors.

Hi,

Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but neither of those devices support the AT Command set for sending or receiving SMS.

This is confirmed by the white papers that SonyEricsson has published regarding these devices.

Generally speaking, a lot of the so-called smart phones on the market today are severely limited in this capability.

Nokia Series 60 phones (also Symbian based), support the AT command set for sending SMS messages, but not for receiving SMS.

If using a phone as a modem, you're generally better off with more of a "middle-of-the-road" phone rather than the high end smart phones. For example, in the SonyEricsson range of phones, the T68, T68i, T610, T630 family is a good choice. In the Nokia range of phones, the Series 40 models are a good choice.

Hi Bryce,

Thanks for the info.

Could you recommend a modem that is compatible with all NowSMS/MMS gateway functions and that is able to handle large transmissions.

I've been recommended Siemans MC35iT which sells for approx. £250. Are you familiar with this modem, and is it worth the asking price?

The phones that I mentioned above are good for sending/receiving SMS, and for sending MMS (but not receiving MMS).

The Nokia "Series 40" reference is a bit cryptic, in retrospect. But if you go to http://www.forum.nokia.com, there is a phone model list there, and you can find which "Series" the different phone models belong to. The 7210 and 7250 are "Series 40" models that we encounter quite frequently being used as modems.

Note that when a GSM phone is used as a modem, it cannot be used for receiving MMS. For that, you need a dedicated GSM modem device. The Siemens MC35 (newer models are known as MC35i) Terminal is the one that I usually recommend because it is quite stable.

It is not the only option ... I've seen customers using GSM modems from Falcom, Wavecom, iTegno and Nokia, among others.

Respected SIr,
I wanted to know whether all the GSM modems support both sms and mms transfer of data using at commands. If yes please send me a list of at commands for mms. My email id is sdk_k@yahoo.com

There is no list of AT commands for MMS.

See the following thread for an explanation of how MMS works:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/589.html

When you have to submit MMS via the operator MMSC, this requires establishing a GPRS connection to submit the MMS message to the operator MMSC. GPRS commands are documented in the ETSI GSM 07.07 specification, which can be downloaded from http://www.etsi.org.

Or, you can download the trial version of NowSMS from this web site, and use it to send the MMS messages.

Avinash,

Try www.smpp.org for more information on the SMPP protocol.

Note that v3.4 is more widely implemented than the v5.0 release that is described on that site, so I'd recommend downloading the v3.4 spec from that site (it is available in the downloads area).

Using a Nokia series 40 phone can I place a voice call and then feed a wav file?? If not on Nokia then is there any other device that can assist in this? Any resources that you can point me to.

Hi Arun,

That is an interesting concept, but I'm not aware of anyway that you could do this.

In the landline world, many modems are also "voice modems", and with the appropriate drivers, it is possible to send voice over the modem.

Here's a link to get you started on that ...

http://www.modemsite.com/56k/voice.asp

Search the web on a keyword of "voice modem" for more info.

But I don't think any mobile phones (or GSM modems) have the voice extensions to allow this type of support.

You could always put the phone next to the PC speaker and play sound over the PC speaker after you dial a number.
