There is some description of how MMS works as the following link:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/589.html

MMS is easier to explain because it uses a combination of SMS and internet technologies.

Explaining how SMS works depends on how technical you want to get. A reasonably technical tutorial can be found at the following link: http://www.funsms.net/sms_tutorial.htm

However, if your project is just SMS/MMS from PC to mobile or vice versa, the above probably won't help you much.

Sending an SMS message requires either a connection to an SMS service provider, or at the low end a GSM modem which is a specialised device that takes a SIM card and operates on the GSM mobile network. (Some mobile phones also offer in-built GSM modem support, and allow you to connect to them with a serial cable, USB cable, bluetooth or infrared.)

Sending/receiving SMS messages through an SMS service provider might use an SMS specific protocol such as SMPP, UCP/EMI or CIMD2, or it might use HTTP.

Sending/receiving SMS messages through a GSM modem uses the AT command set defined in the ETSI GSM 07.05 specification (available from http://www.etsi.org), and the SMS TPDU format defined in the ETSI GSM 03.40 specification.

The documentation for configuring 2-way SMS in NowSMS can be found here:

http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/2_way_sms_support.htm

Of course, you do need an SMS connection (account with an SMS service provider, or a GSM modem).

What happens when you attempt to access the URL?

On the "Service" page of the NowSMS configuration, is the "SMS Gateway Service" started?

On the "Web" page of the NowSMS configuration, is the "Port number for web interface" set to "8800"?

Back to the "Service" page, if you press the "Event Log" button, what entries do you see in that log?

There should be an entry like this:

Info: Now SMS/MMS Gateway vx.xx (xxxxx) service started. Using web port 8800.
