Hi,
I'm testing with a Nokia n-gage and can send SMS messages via the web interface no problem. I can't receive SMS messages at the gateway though. The phone receives the message and pop's up a notification but nothing at the gateway.
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Ted,

Unfortunately the Nokia Series 60 phones, which includes the N-Gage ... do not support the AT commands for receiving SMS messages.

They can send SMS messages just fine, and the commands that are used to poll for received SMS messages to not report any errors.

However, what Nokia has explained to me is that the Symbian OS automatically retrieves any newly received SMS messages, and removes the messages from the SIM. There is no way to disable this behaviour ... and the AT commands cannot be used to view messages in the SMS inbox of the Symbian OS.

So basically, the Series 60 phones cannot be used as a GSM modem to receive SMS messages. This includes the N-Gage, 7650, 3650, and 6600 for certain, and will likely also apply to future Series 60 phones.

Other Symbian phones, such as the Nokia 92x0, and the SonyEricsson P800/P900 have similar restrictions (the P800/P900 are more restricted in that they do not support the commands for sending SMS messages either).

The Nokia Series 40 phones generally work quite well as a modem ... although the phone will intercept many of the Nokia Smart Message types and not forward those messages over the modem interface (you can see which series different Nokia phone models belong to at http://www.forum.nokia.com).

I hope that they find a way to resolve this issue in future Series 60 models. It is a shame that instead of a "smart phone", you need more of a "middle-of-the-road" type of phone in order to support this type of functionality.

Thank you very much for the detailed reply, it's appreciated.

Money no object what would you recommend as the best gsm modem to use with the gateway for sending and receiving sms and mms?

Thanks

Hi Ted,

The Siemens MC35 Terminal and Sierra Aircard 750 will do both SMS and MMS ... sending and receiving.

The Sierra Aircard 750 has an advantage in that it can simultaneously handle GSM and GPRS, so it offers the best performance for MMS. SMS messages (including MMS notifications which trigger the MMS receive process, but are sent via SMS) can continue to be received while MMS messages are being sent/received.

With other devices, we must mode switch between GSM and GPRS modes, which is not as efficient.

But the Sierra card is a PC card, which is not as flexible as an external device. And I also don't think you can install multiple Sierra cards in a PC, while it is no problem to have multiple external modems.

No.

There is a handy chart at the Nokia developer web site (www.forum.nokia.com). Find the "Device Specifications" box. Select "View All Devices", and press "Go". Information about the 3395 can be found on page 3 of that list ... basically the "Connectivity" information is a good indicator of whether or not the phone supports any connectivity to a PC (and if so, it likely has GSM modem support). The 3395 does not support any.
