Hi again,

congratulation for this site, the SW and the great support.

I am trying to understand how the MMS works and how I can create them and send them via the gateway.

When I use the web interface to create and send the MMS what exactly happens ? One SMS is created and sent, this message as MMS header contains some information need by the receipient to fetch the data. Is this right ?
E.g. the URL pointing to the data to be showed or played. These data are retreived by the receiving GSM phone (MMS capable) by e.g. a WAPoGPRS connection (or over GSM 9.6 link). Is this right ?
What about the sender ? If I am using the MMS web interface, I can add some files (e.g. one JPG picture) to be sent but how these files are sent through the web interface ?
Since I am using a D211 card without GPRS is the system using the GSM 9.6 link to upload the data ?

Hope I was clear enough :-)

Thank you
Cheers

Stefano

Hi Stefano,

Hopefully I can be as clear in the response ...

When you use the web interface to send an MMS message, the component files (and text) that you specify are compiled into a binary MMS message file, and stored on the MMSC. An HTTP URL link is published for access to the binary MMS message file.

An MMS notification message is sent to the recipient device over binary SMS. This contains MMS message header information, plus the URL link for fetching the message content from the MMSC.

So, yes, the receiver fetches the message over GPRS or GSM dial-up (depending on the profile configured for MMS on the phone ... with most phones, it points to a WAP profile). Do note that most Nokia phones (exceptions being the 7650 and 3650) will only fetch MMS over GPRS. Most other manufacturers allow either GPRS or GSM dial-up for MMS retrieval.

For the sender, the message content stays on the MMSC until the receiver fetches it. Only the MMS notification (binary SMS) is sent over the modem.

That said, we will have an option in the next major release that allows the message content to be transferred to an operator MMSC over the modem link (GPRS or GSM dial-up). This is a consideration for some operator environments where MMSCs external to the operator network are effectively blocked by the default settings on operator configured mobile phones.

Hi Bryce,

again a mark for the excellent support !
If the content will remain in the MMSC (meaning on my PC running the nowsms gateway) the receiver will need to fetch the data from my PC ? Then the PC need to have a public IP in order to be visible from outside, right ? Otherwise it will not be possible to retreive the data; is this correct ?

Cheers, thank you.

Stefano,

That is correct. The IP address needs to be public on the PC running the NowSMS gateway.

So if you're behind a firewall, the firewall has to forward the HTTP port configured for the MMSC through the firewall (the port number cannot be remapped by the firewall as the MMSC includes its configured port number in the URL that it generates).

If you're on DSL or cable modem with a dynamic address, some people have gotten around this by using the dynamic DNS service at http://www.no-ip.com.

Sorry, version 4.1 is no longer available, if you could let me know why you specifically need that version then I may be able to help.

Hi

I am chasing a copy of NowSMS v4.1. I work for a company in a company in Australia, who owns a company in the USA. The USA company was evaluating/trialing NowSMS v4.1, but was forgotten about before any decision was made. Our Australian company wants to now trial the software, however they want to trial the same version as the US company -- basically pick up where things originally left off. Is it possible to get a copy of version 4.1, or is it no longer available?

v4.1 is no longer available.

Later versions contain all features and functionality of the v4.1 release. They just include additional features and bug fixes.

The information at http://www.nowsms.com/whatsnew.htm describes new features and fixes in post-v4.1 versions.
