Hi, bryce, I would like to ask you something regarding the modem setup. This time I use nokia 6150 as the modem, but when I install Nokia Data Suite3.0a, it didnot add the modem to the "Phone and Modem Option" in the control panel. When I am want to add it manually, the computer hangs. What did I do wrong? I can install the nokia Data Suite perfectly on a laptop, but just cannot do it on a desktop. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you

Hi Zhang Xin, I try to avoid the 51x0 and 61x0 phones that required the Nokia Data Suite. The Nokia Data Suite software is just too tempermental. If you can get a newer phone that includes an inbuilt GSM modem capability, you will be much happier (among other Nokia models, this includes the 6210/6310/6220/6820/7210/7250). Unfortunately, I don't know how to best troubleshoot the Nokia Data Suite software. I would try removing it completely before trying again. Also remove any other installed modem drivers that you are not using before re-installing. I wish I had some other suggestions ... but I've tried to stick to the phones/modem that don't require an extra software driver. -bn

Hi, Bryce, I am now using the nokia 6150 with the data cable connected to a laptop. In the control panel, the diagonstics test said "could not open port", but in Nowsms, the modem testing is ok. When I send sms to the modem, it executes the 2-way command, invokes a servlet which locates on a remote machine,I can see the servlet is running from the log output of the Tomcat server, but I, as a sms sender, did not receive any service indicator back. Why is like that? I suspect is it because the phone (nokia 6150)doesn't support certain feature?

Can you send normal SMS messages ok from NowSMS with that modem? A "2-way" reply should be no different from a regular sending of an SMS message. Perhaps there is an issue with the configuration of your HTTP script for the 2-way command? Go to the "2-way" page of the NowSMS configuration. Highlight the command and press "Edit". Is "Command returns response text" checked? If not, try checking that setting, and press "Add" to put the edited command into the table. Then press "Apply" ... and you will need to restart NowSMS for the change in the "2-way" command table to be reloaded. This assumes that your script is returning a text response. I usually find that what works best for troubleshooting new 2-way commands is to enable the debug log, and see what it says about the commands being executed. Edit SMSGW.INI, and under the [SMSGW] section header, add Debug=Yes. Then restart the NowSMS service, and try again. What does the SMSDEBUG.LOG show? -bn

hi, Bryce, I have solved the problem, I use another phone. Now everything is fine. I guess previous problem may be due to the phone. Perhaps the phone modem doesn't support certain format.

Hi Zhang Xin, I realise that you have solved the problem. But I am still puzzled by the reference to "Command not completed. Request returned invalide content type:text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1" in the log. This shouldn't have anything to do with the modem. This is indicating that NowSMS ran a 2-way command for a received message, and the HTTP script returned content type "text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1". If you want to have an HTTP 2-way command return back a text message to send as a reply, you need to return a MIME content type of "text/plain". Alternatively, you can return an HTTP redirect response with a command for the NowSMS gateway (see http://www.nowsms.com/support/bulletins/tb-nowsms-003.htm). In this case, you need to not check "Command returns response text" when defining the command. -bn |
